Lightbulb Acronyms, Combat Concepts, And More

This Thread is designed for those who have either NEVER played an MMO before or simply don't know one or more aspects of Star Trek Online. It will be edited to fill in questions and additional information as I figure out more parts or answers are provided. Links will also be provided to threads that contain helpful or expansive information about the game. This thread may be moved at a later date in order to facilitate the proper forums subsection for this information.

Acronyms And Definitions

(AoE) Area of Effect: Refers to weapons or abilities that affect an area or section of space rather then affecting a specific target or targets.

(BOff or BO) Bridge Officer: Officers on your bridge, usually used in reference to one or more abilities connected to a bridge officer. Edit Pending improved definition.

(BoP)Bird of Prey: It's the Romulan/Klingon equivalent of an escort; maneuverable, armed to the teeth, but not particularly armored. Both cloak (though early level Klingon Birds of Prey don't; the game doesn't introduce that complexity until midway through the lieutenant levels). Thanks to kaffis for definition.

(DoT) Damage over Time: Damage over a period of time. Usually refers to the plasma burn damage cause by either plasma grenade fires or ship fire damage from Plasma torpedoes.

(DPS) Damage Per Second It is the amount of damage a single weapon (or attack, in the case of ground weapons), fired as often as possible, will put out in one second, if averaged over an extended amount of time against a single target. Damage Per Second is calculated by taking the sum of all the damage dealt to your target by one press of the attack (in other words, adding up multiple pulses or "ticks" on multi-burst or continuous damage weapons), and dividing by the minimum time, in seconds, between firing and being able to repeat the attack. Thanks to kaffis for Info.

(HoT) Health over Time: Healing that occurs over a set period of time, many food items in the game work on health over time rather then instant healing.

(MES) Mask Energy Signature: Bridge Officer ability that cloaks the ship. This is different then the standard Klingon cloak. Current status is bugged and under redevelopment. To be updated as Developers fix and finish changes to it.

(OP) Over Powered: Used in reference to a skill, weapon, ability, or other piece of game content that one or more players believes creates an uneven balance in favor of the user of said skill, weapon, etc.

(PVE) Players verses Environment: Refers to instances in which players may be facing both or either Players and/or NPCs. Thanks to Toyan for correcting my mistake.

(PVP) Player Verses Player: Refers to instances in which players face other players instead of the usual NPCs.

(TB) Tractor Beam or Tachyon Beam: Definition is determined by post/thread content. I suggest reading entire statement/post in order to determine what is being referred to. Tractor beam and Tachyon Beam are Science Bridge Officer abilities.

Suggested Player Reads These are threads or posts that I feel will help out players who want to understand more about the game. Links are provided in order to give true reference to the people who took the time to work out the details and post it for you.

BoP is Bird of Prey. It's the Romulan/Klingon equivalent of an escort; maneuverable, armed to the teeth, but not particularly armored. Both cloak (though early level Klingon Birds of Prey don't; the game doesn't introduce that complexity until midway through the lieutenant levels).

Damage per second is calculated pretty simply; it's the amount of damage a single weapon (or attack, in the case of ground weapons), fired as often as possible, will put out in one second, if averaged over an extended amount of time against a single target. It's arrived at by taking the sum of all the damage dealt to your target by one press of the attack (in other words, adding up multiple pulses or "ticks" on multi-burst or continuous damage weapons), and dividing by the minimum time, in seconds, between firing and being able to repeat the attack.

PBAoE - Point Blank Area of Effect

I didn't know this one before, I't sor stuff like Leg Sweep. It's rather self explanatory, I'm fairly confident it means it's an Area of Effect that occurs only in the target's immediate adjacent vicinity.

This thread is trying to do a similar thing to this one and currently has slightly more content. I hope it proves useful as the information is useful and it would be good to have it spread round a few threads
