Thumbs up Costume Savefile Renaming Tool

Sorry, cancelled on account of game mismanagment.
I've ported my popular Champions Online File rename tool over to STO.

For those not familiar:

This utility will let you browse through your saved costumes, and rename them, not only the Windows filename, but the name stored inside which displays in the Tailor. It will also let you change the Time/Date which is shown in the Tailor as well.

I'm highly allergic to documentation, so I will just say it should be pretty self explanatory, I did put in some help in the program itself though (not a lot though).

The only non-obvious thing is that you can use PgUp/PgDn or Left/Right arrows to cycle through your costume files, once you open the first one.

You can also use the following key shortcuts: Ctrl-D will delete the *costume*, Ctrl-R will bring up the rename dialog, Ctrl-I will bring up the Info dialog, Ctrl-minus will decrease gamma and Ctrl-plus will increase Gamma.

Note that the Gamma and Black/White commands are for display purposes only, and does not change the file.

It also has a setting to make a backup of the file being renamed, which is enabled by default.

And for simplicity sake, here's the usual locations of the Costume files:
C:\Program Files\star trek online\Live\screenshots
or
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\star trek online\Star Trek Online\Live\screenshots

Now for the legals. While I have made every effort to ensure this program works well and doesn't do any harm, The program is offered as is, and I accept no liability for any corruption of save games or your computer dying, or your wife leaving you, ect. Use at your own risk.

If you have suggestions or problems, please let me know here in this thread.

Future Plans:
- Add the ability to move uniforms between save files of different species.

And before someone says it, No it doesnt' steal your password, or your key or anything else for that matter, nor have any virus, trojan, or other harmful garbage. I don't need that kinda of drama in my life.

Enjoy.

I will. Just have to be sure I don't make too many assumptions and trash people's costume saves. Champions Online was a bit simpler, but with two factions and many races, there's a lot of possibilities.

I kind of worry. Seeing as there is an (admittedly small) in-game fee, this might be considered an exploit?

I thought about that. But it actually only renames the savefile, not the character in game. To apply the change you would have to load the save, and this would cause the fee to be applied. Plus at this point I'm not even sure that would rename the character. I should probably remove that comment from my initial post.

I could, but it's not going to be much use to anyone who isn't a programmer, it's written in Visual C++ using the Microsoft Foundation Classes. Is there any particular reason you need the code?

i can think of 2 reasons;

1. others can make changes/updates/expand your code, you can then vet it and release

2. simply peer review, im all for little mini apps like this for games, and please dont take this personally - its simply a fact, but there are people out there that would use a helpful tool to distribute malware, etc... I think it important that other users can see that you are an upstanding and legitimate fellow

Well, I don't really care if anyone uses it or not. I'm making it for myself, and making it available for those who may also want to use it.

The argument that providing the source code means no malware is invalid, as i could simply provide clean source, but compile in all sorts of nastiness in the meantime (if I were that sort).

I personally am not a fan of Open Source, after many years of dealing with it and the types it attracts. Demanding the source is sort of like demanding a restaurant show you their financials so you can be sure they aren't going to skimp on the quality of the ingredients before you eat there. It's just a bit intrusive and dare I say rude.

Not to even mention that attempting to suggest I would even do such a thing as write malware. I'm 39 years old, I am gainfully employed in the electronics industry. I make $85,000 a year and I really don't need to 'scam keys' or wipe people's hard drives for kicks. Cryptic has my full name, address, telephone # and Credit Card information. I would have to be retarded to even attempt such a foolhardy act.

In closing, every person has a choice, they can use this, or they can not use this. Or they could even go write their own, if they are so inclined. But I think I won't be bullied or intimidated into giving out my intellectual property, sorry.

I'm going to poke my nose in even though I wasn't invited.

I must have missed something in this tread. My interpretation of it was:

#1 - Hey I made this neat costume renamer that I'm willing to let others use. I claim no responsibility for your use of it.

#2 - That's a nice program, could you release the source.

#1 - Why would anyone release the source for a program?

#2 - Well to allow others to add to it and to just make sure there isn't anything fishy in there.

#1 - I'm not a thief. I don't like open source, or cats or dogs. I'll not be bullied into giving you the source code. Na, Na, Na, Na.

---------------------------
Somehow it jumped from asking for the source code to you've threatened me into giving it up. I missed that jump. (And yes the "cats or dogs" was an attempt at showing how irrelevant I thought some of the information that was posted in the reply was).

On another note, I'll confess that reading your reply made me want to download your program for the sole purpose of trying to reverse engineer it and post the reverse engineered code. Also note that I'd have to figure out how to reverse engineer it in the first place.

Well I'm done with my rant. Have fun.
