Default The Official PC / NPC Bridge Crew Discussion Thread

Hey everyone!

Over the past few days the topic that is generating a majority of the posts on the forums is the issue of Player Character (PC) and Non-Player Character (NPC) Bridge Crews. Rather than have new threads created, I'm making this one to centralize the discussion. This thread is the only place the topic should be discussed.

Existing threads and new threads on the subject will be closed.

This is also to help me focus the discussion so that when I do bring information to the developers it is easier for me to find it and get it into a presentable format quicker. Please take this into consideration for all topics that are discussed here: the less threads, the better.

Please refer to the Forum Rules and Code of Conduct when posting.

Thank you!

My personal and I think doable idea is simple. Have certain instances and or Task Forces that require a Player Based Bridge Crew. I for one would not want to be forced into a Player Based Bridge crew on a permanent basis.

It would be great to actually meet up with your friends (form a fleet/guild) and just be in control over the ship along with them. Co-operation, teamwork is the greatest thing there is with all Trekkies. Wouldn't it be awesome to wake up, log on the computer and walk onto the Bridge where some friends greet you and you all decide to do a little exploring? I think this is the dream of any Trekkie really.. It's just plain silly to have NPC's running all over the place while you have the chance to make a game this immersive and breath taking.

Thanks for making this topic!

My thought is that there should be missions or episodes based on PC bridge crew gameplay. Players can team up, work together on a single ship to get that Star Trek feel, and when the mission is over, they would return to their own ships.

This allows players to play together on a single ship, and it doesnt have many of the downfalls of a full PC crew system, such as what to do when the captain is not online.

I'd like it to be a possiblity to use PC crew while in a fleet. IE grouping up with your fellow guildmates and stuff. Making it universal and NEEDED ie forcing people to group wouldn't be cool with me. I believe that having the option wouldn't hurt though. Maybe making it so that even in a PC crew you could generate an NPC to take the spot of someone who had to log or soemthing like that. Anyways.. just some thoughts.

Here are the two words in you statement we already know Cryptic are against, "forced" and "permanent", so I doubt there is any need to worry about being stuck doing something you don't want to, but it is obvious that the one-ship - one-captain feature has a large percentage of the community in protest and the creation of this thread give merrit to, at least the validity of discussing it.

While I was disappointed that there wouldn't be player bridge crews on release, I understood Cryptic's reasoning why. It's no matter of not knowing how to implement it, it's simply the fact that finding things to do for six different people on a mission instead of one is hella difficult to do, and would hike up the development time to a crazy amount.

I hope this is alright, just copying and pasting my questions from the thread I had started into the official thread:

"Do we know yet what kind of options will be available for your bridge crew customization (anything more than a job/race/name/appearance)?

On a similar, will there be any customization on the generic crew members, ie all vulcans (possibly giving a bonus to some area?), or all women (Kirk's dream ship), or something else?

As in my Diplomacy? thread, I realize the game is a ways out there, so the answers probably have yet to be finalized, but I'd appreciate someone pointing towards any answers that may be there."

I have never played an MMO game but am seriously considering making STO my first. I have played many PC ST games though.

With that in mind I do like the idea of having your bridge crew like your "pets" as described in the Las Vegas webcast. You groom them, educate them, they gain experience similar to your main character. I like this idea becuase it would be hard if not impossible to run your ship if they were controlled by other on-line players.

The only thing I have to compare the pet thing is SFC III. I am sure it will be a little more interactive than the SFC III bridge crew but along those lines.
