Kirk blew up his entire ship just to kill like 8 or 9 Klingons. That's hardcore.

He also saved the planet/federation more times than Picard.

Picard needed the help of an omnipotent god like being to avoid destroying the entire human race. The man was incompetent, not to mention, a Borg collaborator.
