Default Harsh Reception of New Ship Design at TrekMovie.com

TrekMovie New Ship Design Blog

Check out the new comments about the new ship design at TrekMovie. In contrast to the positive reception here at the official forums, the comments have been downright nasty and assaultive.

This could be a bad sign of the reception of STO in the more mainstream audience.

Most of the negative comments center on the claim that the new design is lazy, unimaginative, and uninspied souped up Sovereign refit. Many claim it is ugly. And many warn it is a sign of the type of game Cryptic is making if even their ship designs are uncreative, what about the game.

Deeply troubling.

I doubt that will spell anything. You are talking about people who were already not going to play the game to begin with, and since they think they have the ear of the Star Trek community as a whole, they think their words are words of wisdom. Besides that, I can already name who six of those posters are over there that already post here, because they used the exact same comments.

It's all true, too. No matter how much you polish a turd, its still a turd. I've seen Bridge commander ship mods that are 10x more astounding than this "NX" class AKA Sovereign refit. I'm not THAT upset about it, but call it what it is, its just a Sovereign refit.

It's just that kind of reception that has be worried about the viability of STO. Many of the people here who game positive reviews of STO may just lap up whatever Cryptic throws at them once every month.

But outside people are the best estimate of the appeal of STO. And Trek Movie is a TREKKIE site, they should be excited for STO. AND 90% of them are NOT.

I think there is nothing wrong with the design. That is one of the troubles when trying to be creative with an established IP like Star Trek. There is a fine line you have to follow. You Mimic the original style to much and it is considered unimaginative or uninspired. but if they make something truely original they are not making "Trek" it doesn't look anything like Star Trek, or they are not following Roddenberrys vision.

Like all things you can't please everybody, and the ppl that do not like an idea scream the loudest. so all comments of negativity you have to take with a grain of salt. but at the same time you can't ignore them.

Again, I think they are doing fine with the design direction. the ship, in my opinion could use more cosmetic changes to make it look a little more different than the Soverign. But there is only so much you can do to Star Trek ships before they no longer look like Star Trek ships anymore.

Are we going to be so harsh with what Cryptic comes up with that they can't make any ships that do not fit the classic Trek mold? I would have a game that offers plenty of variety of ships as well asthe "classic" ships. That way everybody can pick their favorite style of ship. And be happy with their choice. and not feel like they were forced to pick a ship that does not fit their perferred ship style.

I strongly agree with the negative comments about the ship, but I would go so far as to say the whole game follows that trend. The visuals for the most part are impressive, but I'm pretty upset about the gameplay, the fact that there are only TWO playable races, and that there is no talk of PvP. This game will crash and burn if it doesn't shape up in HUGE way, it's totally behind the times as an MMO. WoW was originally like this game back in it's early beta, I'm not saying this game should be like it, but there are certain criteria for a successful MMORPG, that STO is lacking.

2 Points

#1. To be fair this is only one ship we've seen released by Cryptic as a "new vessle" I'm sure there will be other NX type vessels in the game and new designs.

#2. I went to the post and read the reviews on TrekMovie.com it looks like a mix of good and bad reviews. Your posting made it sound that everyone on that site hated the new ship.

K so 3 points...

3. I love the new ship, even if it is a refit or play on the design of an older vessel.

my fav post on Trekmovie.com was this "40. S. John Ross - December 26, 2008
I think these people are stuck in a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” position when it comes to hardcores and canonistas. If they stick to variations on established designs, they’ll get slammed for “no creativity.” If they venture out and really try to define a new visual era for their period, they’ll get slammed for making something unfamiliar and out-there that doesn’t feel like established Star Trek.

In fact, given the nature of some segments of fandom, I think they’re really doomed to a mix of both responses no matter where they go; all they can do is shift the ratio a bit "

ps: In the long run, its just a game. I dunno why people get so heated over it.

You can make your own race, and they have talked about PVP- the Neutral Zone will be the PVP area.

My question is whether the universe will be static. For example, if I log off World of Warcraft and then login a week later everything is pretty much still the same. Nothing has really changed. Will the world be dynamic in STO?

Zinc: The universe of Star Trek Online is shaped and changed by the actions of the players. The Federation and the Klingon Empire will be competing for influence and resources throughout the galaxy and players can influence the results through PvP battles and a system we're calling Competitive PvE.

The actions, victories and defeats of you and your faction will affect how the economy and history of Star Trek Online unfolds. Exploration is always happening – expect to see new planets and races discovered that were unknown the last time you logged in. Your actions could be the deciding factor on whether these new planets side with the Federation or the Klingons.
