Default LCARS Library and Database

It seems to me that this game has a large potential to bring newcomers to the "Trek Experience" alot of these newcomers will likely be overwhelmed and deeply confused by the large collection of trekology terms and other things that have been added into the trek cannon over its 5 series and 1 animitated series aswell as countless books that are on the market. It seems to me that we need an in game source of all knowledge that is trek. one thats easily searchable and even expandable, not to mention "Canon". Hence this is what I propose

A Wiki, built directly into STO with a team of player moderators monitering all entries into the system and Disguise this system as the LCARS Database / Library. This system should include anything and everything "Trek" and or "STO" including not only genaric trek terms like "Warp Drive" but also genaric MMO terms like "AFK" that way we'll have no more need to ask about a term that came from another game that we havn't played instead players can simply pull up the LCARS Database and search for it. Its easy to see that this can become an invalueable tool for someone who's unfamilair with the Trek universe allowing them to search for such standard things as Zefrin Cockren and his connection to warp drive.

This is something that should be up and running by beta allowing those participateing in beta to add and update it as nessisary so that they have a good baseline at launch.

Things that wouldn't be allowed is spoilers, quest walkthrews, website URLS and such as well as advertisements of any sort like the gold sellers cause being a public submission system they would not dought try which is why I say form a team of player moderators (say 10 to 20 dedicated souls) to sift threw the submissions as they come.. if it takes 3 months between the submission date to get it added... so be it

However just because spoilers arn't allowed doesn't mean background stories of the places and other things wouldn't be included. Infact everyone should even be allowed to add their own entry for their character and ship if they like (NO BLACKLISTING OR FLAMING OTHERS OFCOURSE). theres no reason why we shouldn't be able to pull up the LCARS Database and look up the name of any ship or station we pass and see a small blurb of the known information about it.

Why I like the Wiki system for this is because allowing players to constantly add to and change the entries as they become outdated always ensures that there will be a vast and diverse ammount of information directly related to the Trek Culture and STO, there by adding to the experience

An ingame Wiki would be an interesting concept. We'll have to wait and see how the game mechanics play out as far as persistent environments go. It wouldn't do any good if I make first contact with a new race on Planet X, write up a wiki entry for someone to read only to have the next player show up and make first contact all over again in a new instance. Now if I make first contact on Stardate xxxxx.x and the next player to visit the planet on xxxx.y finds that the world has evolved, they could modify the wiki to reflect the new standing.

As always there would have to be an ingame reward to do this or very few people would take the time.

Very good idea. Even the television crews had to consult the library computer sometimes. I think the in-game Wiki would be a vibrant feature. As far as editing it I believe that there should be a firm Cryptic oversight to that. Overall a good idea.

AWESOME IDEA DUDE!!! very impressed. however, i don't like the tack-on of rewards to add to it... MMO communities have always supported themselves and fellow players by sharing their information and even creating web pages/sites to help one another. if you create a reward system, it will unballance the game, allowing the players with the most time to play, or highest levels to take advantage of the new content, and "lock in" a reward that no one else will have access to, since the entry to the library can be made only once. perhaps it could be more of a "veteran" reward or something... that gives no real PvP or PvM advantage, but merely adds a certain level of convenience.

I don't like the "Rewards" idea for this because of the reasons mentioned above, exspecially because lots of people build fan sights with this kind of information for free. This instead just gives them an official outlet to build on.

As for the moderating of content, I too wouldn't mind if cryptic fully moderated it themselfs BUT the downside to this is that it would be a large time consumer and to pay a team to do it day in and out would be a large sink of money exspecially when you could grab 10 to 15 dedcated Trek Fans to moderate it then just have 1 overseer at cryptic that looks over their shoulders from time to time. And have a Report button on each topic that players can click if a moderater is abusing their power somehow that way cryptic can track and remove any violators

Moderating content was my only concern. But I think you've answered that. Good deal. I like it.

This is a great idea! I definitely agree with a lot of what you have stated and I definitely wouldn't mind seeing something like this implemented in the game, even if it is some time after the game launches!

Sounds like a real cool idea. If an ig solution isn't possible, we should try to gather some people and make an "normal" wiki.

The wowwiki or swgwiki for example are full of usefull informations and really successful.

I do like the idea of an in-game official wiki. I've seen other MMOs with similar pages on the web, so it's not totally out of the question. You could even have profile pages for crews and fleets, much like WoW Armoury.

Even if there wasn't an official one, that's what we're here for!

This already exists right here, and although in-game information is lacking (primarily due to the fact that we lack the game - hehe!), the player community has already been very, very busy and I am excited about the development.
