Default So, question for my fellow old farts...

Not old as in 'been watching STO for years' but rather old as in 'I remember when online games had no graphics'

Oh, and save your breath/fingers I'm not interested in joining a fleet until the game goes live at least.

Anyway, my question, are there any of you floating around out here that participated in the old Trek MUDs and MUSHes? I did some buuilding/coding work on a couple and after lurking here and reading a bit I started wondering if there were any others like me out there. Of course the real challenge will be in remembering names, it's been... fifteen years?

Oh and hi everybody

Well, one ole fart to another, i remember the MUD as my best freind at the time, rest his sole, was really into it . We were both heavy gamers at the time, and i was into an ole dos game battleship and he was into that and he finally converted me to a real Trekkie later.
I stated on another thread i remember watching the very first episode of the original Star Trek on tv and was mesmerized by the special effects. lol.
I used to hear my grandfather talk about from buckboard , to radio to tv and man i feel the same way when it comes to gamiing.
I too remember sci fi gaming on my ole 286 and commodore and felt of the elite. lol.
Hello everyone, mmo main toon is always Astorian, and am retired and spend alot of time gaming.
On another mmo we had a senior guild, 40 and over and i was surprised how many members we had.
Good luck to all in the upcoming beta draw and hope to be in Star Trek Online soon.

I played a variet of MUDs and MUSHes, ranging from original fantasy, to Dragonball, Star Wars, Star Trek, and anime themes. So many =D And so many gone D= Ah I miss those MUDding days.

"MUD" - now that term is a blast from the past.

I played many text based games on the old BBS's before internet was generally available.

The first "computer" I used did not even have a monitor. It was basically a keyboard and daisy wheel printer using fanfold paper that hooked to the university using an acoustic coupler that held the phone reciever at a blazing 400 baud speed.

The best game you could play was a Lunar Landing simulator. If you worked it right you could crash and make a crater larger than the moon's diameter.

I do still have a working 386DX25 running Windows 3.11

Say, think I will be able to play STO with it?

I remember my first PC was an 8088 fully loaded up with 256k of RAM and eye-popping 4 color CGA graphics

So I did some digging, one of the Mushes I worked on was 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Since I'm a programming geek I actually still had notes with the code for our changes to 'Chuck Space' but looking through them I think that was the Mush that never really opened to the public so I'd be suprised to find anybody here that remembers it. I can't remember the other one for the life of me.

Yeah, those were the days. We didn't have shaders but we were the shiznit because our MUSH had colored text!!! Oh, and fancy ASCII 'graphics' for important places and ship diagrams. I wish I had saves more from them, people here would probably get a kick out of our TNG-esque menus.

Oh well, the nice part about being old and crusty is that I can remember when we dreamed of playing with more than 100 people on a server and real graphics too.

Greetings sir! On behalf of Aurora Fleet, welcome to STO.

My first Trek game was on the PET before any of us even had heard about MUDS. Maybe you can guess the rough time frame

Indeed, although we had TRS-80s

So many people complain about download times when we used to have to photocopy pages from a magazine and type the game in manually. Damn kids
