I actually posted this in the Big Ideas thread this morning! lol
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I liked the way that Pirates of the Burning Sea implimented this, since it sounds quite similar.

You are cruising on the main map, fresh out of the academy, headed whereever, when you get chased down and ambushed by a fleet of Klingon warships.
Clearly your miranda class is no match, so you use the bridge officer skill "Distress Call".

Where others on the map could see your skirmish, it now is flagged as a distress call, and players can come and jump in to assist you, and earn themselves bonus experiance/reputation for doing so.

In the meantime you are trying to dodge the klingon torpedoes, hoping that someone is on their way, a bit like it really would be.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it could be a cool bridge officer skill

And maybe player-sent distress signals could be factored in into the "daily missions"...

As long as the players can get used to the idea of random encounters occasionally _requiring_ help to defeat - and I think Trek-fans do tend to be more socially oriented than they're usually given credit for, so I'm not worried - I think it'd be great.

On a semi-frequent basis, especially near the Neutral Zone, there should probably be large spawns of PvE ships representing a new offensive push trying to sneak in, which one or two "lucky" starships will stumble upon. Then you could have a rush to either assemble a big armada to drive them off in force, or if there's not enough players/interest to handle the fleet head on, have some scout ships try to keep track of them until they start splitting up to strategic targets or the NPC Starfleet/Imperial Fleet shows up to respond.

In the interests of keeping it such that one ship can still make a difference, maybe engaging such an armada should be split up into multiple encounters - trying to delay them by engaging their picket ships, getting close enough to scan out their fleet composition and strategic assets, protecting civilian ships while they evacuate the crisis zone, etc. Or if you have a big enough fleet assembled (or a Kirk-size ego) try and just engage the core of the armada head-on.

Default Distress Signals

The point of a Distress Signal is your sendoe one out because your about to get slaughted by some big nasty bad guy and you need help so it shouldnt Matter if some other ship or ships come in and save the day but destroying your foe that the hole poinnt yur screaming for help so some friendllys will come in nd save the day. It's not KSing is you hit the distress beacon. If i have to use the Distress Becon I would be very happy if someone came to my rescue by blowig up my foe. So my sugesstion to you is If you hit that button then then dont compain if some cruisers or escorts come in and sve your bacon by killing what was beating the snot out of you. just be thankful they got there before you were space dust.

I hear that Cryptic has also been sending out a distress signal for help to finish this game and make it better.

I think this is an awesome idea. If you get in over your head you have a panic button especially with the inability to go to warp to escape an attacker.

Would this apply to PVP as well?

I like the idea of a Distress Signal as well.

I'm hoping there is some kind of presitge bonus for players responding, that way it encourages people to actually help, than go about on their business like you never existed.

This sounds a lot like the flares from PotBS, which I thought was a great idea. Would also love to see something like that in STO.
