Why does it need to be based 30 - 50 years after Nemesis? All the cool main characters from the three series won't be around except for B4, Nog, and a few others. I say they should base it a few years after, like 3 or 4. I wanna see what Picard is up to, or Riker or Worf. I'd even like to see how the DS9 crew it doing. Here's another neat idea, those characters could give out special quests or something.

i guess it gave them more they could play around with to shake things up. or even better this could lead to a new series, which im sure all true trek fans are waiting for! i also think with the time line that they are releasing we will get enough of and update on all of our favorite characters and main players in the trek universe.

If you browse the forums you'll notice many people can complain a lot about things like "in episode #xxx of TNG mr Worf clearly stated bla bla", and perhaps some addiction of Vulcan logic. They demand their geeky knowledge of Star Trek to be applicable to the game. By placing the game 30 years ahead cryptic can use their own creativity while still being Star Trek and keeping the geeks happy. I think it's a good choice. I prefer it to become a fun game based on the series instead of a copy of the series which isn't any fun due to all kinds of factors. (balance being a big one)
Just look at random sitcoms/cartoons/etc, stereotype Star Trek geeks are awful, yet they are many and Cryptic needs their cash while not scaring others away.

I think you sort of answered you own question. Star Trek's universe is as compelling as the characters, and having them in the game would take away from the importance of your character's own exploits.
I always thought that was the biggest problem witH WoW. Without instancing, my character never felt unique or important. I was doing the same exact quest the guy next to me was doing.

Interestingly enough the primary reason to set it so far after Nemesis is specifically so the "cool main characters from the three series won't be around." I personally don't want to take quests from Picard or Riker, I want my own Trek story and not one in the shadows of others.

Setting it so far after Nemisis is the best choise. The best you could hope for otherwise is just a continuation of the series andtheir you have everyone entering a time of peace. We are the Fans and this game is for us. Let us write our own story and what we do BE the new series.

You know, it occurred to me that this game, unlike a lot of licensed MMORPG games like Matrix, Star Wars, Pirates, etc, actually has a big advantage. Star Trek really is 5 seperate shows, so when you think of Star Trek, you don't have to get stuck focusing on just a specific small group of characters. Star Trek doesn't have to be Kirk, it can easily be another Captain., which makes it very easy for the players to find their own story to tell.

I really like the timeframe that the game is set in because I think it allows a lot of elements we know of from the Star Trek universe to be present while simultaneously allowing room for a lot of innovation. Also, just because the game is set in one time frame does not mean that certain characters will never make an appearance, considering the fact that time travel is such a prevalent aspect of the Star Trek universe.

It allows them alittle creative freedom to do what they want. Besides, after only a few years we would see all the great characters, but the game would be boring. The ships wouldnt be fighting or even exploring, they would be shipping medical supplies and food and stuff for reconstruction. Unless you want to do that, i prefer the time frame being used.
