I have a feeling it was Perpetual, however it does look like the engine Cryptic is using, plus that ship design is seen in the GameInformer article about STO(cryptic's version), as well as the screenshot of the big borg battle here:

Finaly, Cryptic has stated that they really didnt use anything they got from Perpetual. Does anyone know for sure?

I do.
That's a PE pre-rendered concept art shot.

Actually, according to perpetual it was an in game screenshot,

And yes, it was from perpetual. Cryptic appears to be using a lot of perpetuals concept art.

With what? They had no engine.

While they did make minimal progress. they did have an engine up and working. It wasn't what you would say entirely playable as Cryptic demonstrated in their first video. But all the same it was a engine.

There VERY first screen shots were even from the engine. But it was to demonstrate what their engine "could" do. Not what the game would look like. Sadly it got every bodies hopes up! :P

Expect that when STO releases, it may have more of a Perpetual flavor than most realize....

After all, Cryptic did BUY PE's stuff. Plus the very short timeline to release? You better believe Cryptic will us whatever they can from PE's original run. Story, Characters, Ships, you name it.

I was under the impression that they didn't get access to any of PE's artwork, tilesets, etc. I know they didn't have an engine built so they didn't have any code. Maybe they are borrowing some concepts from PE? Not really sure.

As for the short timeline to release, if they already have an engine built and they're just pumping out artwork and content for the game, then I can see how they can move this game out quickly.

It's been repeatedly stated by the developers that, while they did purchase everything from PE, "everything" amounted to the license, some concept art, and some ship models they couldn't even use.

The development has happened as quickly as it has because Cryptic had created their own in-house engine prior to acquiring the game, and they're using it for both Champions Online and Star Trek Online, no doubt with some mild tweaking to suit each game.

Where did you get that from? They did have an engine, they had a whole other game.

Just like Cryptic is developing two games with the same engine, so was perpetual. Word on the street is it was a pretty bad engine, but they had an engine none the less.
