OK, I've just spent the last couple of hours trying to find a thread on this topic. If there is one, I'm sorry, I'm sure our friend Razor will point it out for me.

This is something I've been really concern about and haven't heard nothing about too. I think it would be an important topic Cryptic should adress soon if they already haven't. Mainly because if character or ships of the present canon appear in STO it would become canon later on. Lets face it, STO will become an artistic tool (it already is), expanding and creating more of the Star Trek Universe (great!) and will give the creating job both to the players but mainly to Cryptic. So, if you have an opinion on the matter, please post and lets hope Cryptic offers an official position on it soon enough.

I would love to encounter some of the old characters descendants across the universe (played by AI's obviously, its too great a responsability for anyone) or even better the old characters themselves. Also, it would be great to visit historic starships like NX-01 in space stations or watch how the Voyager goes to a new mission. I think many of this could be done either as AI's inside the game (difficult) or as cinematics players could activate in certain situations (more likely) while playing.

I don't know, maybe we will even meet the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-F for the first time in Star Trek Online.
Great power, great responsability Cryptic!

I personally would love Sisko to appear. It would be completely feasible too :)

Only problem is most of the original series characters would be dead. Except for Scotty, becasue in TNG they found him trapped in mid transportation were he had been for a bunch of years.

I think that having old characters make cameo appearances is a good idea, but if they are in the game too much then I believe it takes some of the focus away from the player characters, which is never a good thing. As far as ships, I think that it is best to have a combination of both old and new ships in order to please both the fans who want to play with familiar vessels as well as those who want to try out some of the new ships.

I wrote this in the 3 thread of cryptic's questionare, but I would personally love to see Data again. Maybe even do a mission with him or something.

They have specifically said in interviews and I believe even in the FAQ, that you will not be running into a lot of "known" characters. Most are either dead or retired. This makes sense for two reasons.

First - few people want to play in the shadows of well known characters it is boring and creates rehashed game play.

Second - It would probably increase their costs to license the characters. Plus they would be restrained with what they could do with those characters because they can't change canon.

I agree with both of your explanations of why Cryptic may not get too much involved with the known characters, but the second reason only halfway. They already have the license for a lot of things I think; and more importantly, like it or not, as with any other Star Trek product, it will become canon. More if the product is something as STO with such a great impact on fans and non-fans making it a first hand experience.

Now, I'm not saying lets go into missions with Admiral Picard or Captain Data, I would simply like to see someone in Starfleet Headquarters from a distance or maybe run across a famous captain in space but only as an extra inside the game and not an important part of gameplay. I just think it would make it much more the Star Trek experience. Even Sisko or Janeway make great comments of Kirk in the series and when Sisko had a chance he talk to Kirk in the past (DS9: Trials and Tribble-ations), So, if I had the chance, just for a moment, to live in the Star Trek Universe I think one of the things I would like to do (top of the list) would be to meet someone as Picard or Janeway. Any Trek fan would agree on this I think, even Klingons respected Kirk.

Also, I've already read the FAQ twice and again now that you mention it but I don't find anything on the subject. Maybe you could quote please?

When I was talking about starships I didn't meant the already known starship-classes but specific starships such as the Enterprise or Voyager. And just as characters not with an important role in gameplay but as something you can find inside STO. For example, it would be great to visit the NX-01 that I remember Troi mentioning was a museum she visited in her early life (ENT: These Are The Voyages...).

I think it would be nice/enough if they were to have one or two missions issued to you by a known character, like Nog or someone :) it wouldn't be overshadowing, either.

I'd love to see some of the old characters in the game. STO takes place only 30 years after Nemesis. Voyager's final episode Endgame took place about five years before the STO time line so we know a lot of the Next Generation era (TNG, DS9, and VOY series) characters could still be alive, even Spock would still be alive (born in 2232, STO is in 2409, he's be 177, Vulcans live to be about 200). It would be interesting to see some of the old crews and see what they're up too. Maybe see Harry Kim commanding the Rhoad Island, taking orders from Admiral Janeway or Admiral Riker, according to ...All Good Things Picard was an Ambassador for a while before retiring, and I'd die to see Q.

Theres nothing against seeing the ships, and maybe at the start take control of Voyager or the Enterprise as a tutorial before they stick you into the shuttlecraft and send you on your way. People may die, but a little elbow grease and a degree in advanced engineering is all you need to fix up an old starship.
