ok I just want to get a idea how big space will be. I want to know how long it will take with Impulse drive to go throw a sector. Let say sector 001 a example is I played FFXI mmo for 4 years and I can walk or use chocobo( a Big chicken) in a zone(sector) If I walk it will take me 30 mins to go from start of zone to end of zone and chocobo it will take 10 mins. Ok so if I start at sector 001 with Impulse drive(walk) will it take 10-15 mins to get to the end and will warp(chocobo) take 1-3 mins? This will give me a good idea how big space is.

well, impulse drive should get you nowhere in the big picture.
it should be used for combat and or closing on a planet or object, moving at impulse from
one system to the nearest other system takes...years
given that, movement on the big map should be expressed in warp.
Speeds at warp and impulse usually differ by a factor of between a hundred and tens of thousands. Basically you could cross a sector that would take several hours to cross at impulse in a matter of seconds at high warp.

Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

Space. It seems to go on and on forever. But then you get to the end and the gorilla starts throwing barrels at you.

The Milky Way Galaxy is approximately 100,000 light years across and about 1,000 light years thick at it's thickest point. The Federation, supposedly, takes up approximately 10,000 light years of that space.
That being said, most space sectors, by Federation set up, take up approximately 20 light years square. I doubt Cryptic will be using that large of a scale, but to entertain these values, and let's supppose for a moment that that's exactly how large everything is, let's input everything and time to travel a sector fo space at varying speeds.
Full Impuse is defined as 0.25c, or 1 quarter the speed of light. At that speed it would take roughly 80 years for a starship to cross one sector.
Warp 1 is defined as 1c, or the speed of light. At that speed it would take 20 years to cross one sector.
Warp 5 is defined as 214c, or 214 times the speed of light. At that speed it would take 1 month to cross 1 sector of space.
Warp 9 is defined as 1,516c, or 1,516 times the speed of light. At that speed it would take 5 days to cross one sector of space.
Warp 9.99 is defined as 7,912c, or 7,912 times the speed of light. At that speed it would take 22 hours to cross one sector of space.
Basically put, using those figures, it would be unreallistic to put things in actual time frames. Time scales will obviously be drastically reduced as well as the addition of Transwarp Hubs and Wormholes. Honestly, even if we could do warp 9,999 I wouldn't want to spend the time staring at the screen to get somewhere, and I hope travel times are no where near those that are defined by warp.

Space will be approximately 20 by 20. Well, I only have a 20” monitor, so that’s the size limit. :)

i wonder if space is still expanding? maybe in the game, it just gets bigger and bigger, untill boom!

Quite frankly your not going to get a straight answer as of yet. We are all waiting for Cryptic to release more information.
Realistic distances are impractical. And Instant travel kinda takes the "Trek" out of things.
So they are going to come up with a middle ground. what that may be is anybodies guess. They are wanting to do things that that have never been done in an MMO genre. They are doing planets, space, trying to create an entire universe, make infinite place to discover.
Just those few things make for a very tall order in the MMO world. It's ambitious and I commend them. But I'm still looking for follow through. And so far, it's all looked positive to me.

It will be interesting to see just how vast space is in the game, especially considering the exploration mechanic that the developers have discussed.

Eve online's Map is just mind boggiling to me. If STO's map is half as big as Eve's I will be completely satisfied by any means lol.
Of course I wouldn't doubt STO's map is bigger if not vastly more enormous then Eve's map.
