There's been a lot of negativety and arguing on the forum of late, so I decided to create a thread for expressing our views on everything that's right. What has you excited about this game? What has been revealed so far that has really gotten you ready to play?

I'll start:

Ship customization. I am really looking forward to tinkering with my starship, from the simple runabouts we'll probably be starting in, to the big ol' Sovereigns. I'm hoping there's alot there and it's a real balancing act to get the ship how I want it e.g. I've worked on my impulse, so it's one of the fastest around but someone else with the same class decided to work on his sensors and is telling me all sorts about enemy vessels or strange new worlds that I can't detect.

Agree with me or has something else caught your eye?

The fact that they actually give us results, as opposed to Perpetual.

LOL. That IS the best answer. Back to the OP the little teaser from Al about the ship combat has me excited to see what they give us. 2nd place is ship customization.

They got that whole thing about ducks having to wear short pants, right... no wait wrong people...

They got the NPC crew right because now I actually have more than one role to play, which is always good... all the world is a stage or something.

I am also excited about the ship customization; I am really looking forward to seeing how that is going to work and what we can do. What interests me even more is the possibility of creating my own playable race. It is all about possibilities, and Cryptic is giving us plenty of them to mull over.

I have actually been driving myself to distraction thinking about all the things I would like to be able to create with these features. :D

I get altitis, so having more than one crew member should prevent me from having dozens of alts :D

NPC crews IMO have alot of potential, if the AI is good on them. Getting to work on them with what will probably be some deep customization is one of the other things I really look forward too.

I think Cryptic understands the STO community and knows how to tip-toe around us realy well, which in my mind is a great thing to see. In my opinion many STO fans (I'm not immune to this myself) often get a view of STO in their heads that can't be compromized, that they must have. Cryptic has done realy well with releasing the info they have as it avoids giving some of the more outspoken people ammo against them. Unlike in the PE days where we we're kept mostly in the dark with small interviews discribing big concepts Cryptic on the other hand has realeased tidbits of information with solid backing (many have already mentioned the Screenshots and Video) and thats something that works in their favor, they won't say much about it untill they can show us... and seeing is often half the battle when getting out of the mental image of STO.

Now as for STO and what Cryptic has done Right... well I'll start with multi-factions, honestly I didn't see the Klingon thing coming (the war/cold war thing we've got going for us), but its a good thing. Honestly for PvP type gameplay I expected Romulan vs. Federation, but then again I suppose cryptic has done a good job of going against normal expectations without destroying Trek backstory.

Another thing I'm pleased with is the Race creator tool that they have told us the game will have. There are so many minor races in Trek that I'd be interested in playing and its nice to see that it has become a possability. One of the argumants with PE was their race list, it fluxuated a few times we lost some gained some but with Cryptic if you like a race, chances are you'll be able to make it (though exceptions are noted).

So in my opinion Cryptic is heading in the right direction and I'm VERY excited about STO.

The NPC Bridge crews acting as pets, I can see it becoming more like you, your crew, and the ship are what you play as. Like it is in the show.

I had posted this in another thread but it seems more appropriate in this one.

Yes thank you Cryptic for making a Star Trek game. Star Trek is in trouble right now with falling popularity. It is with this game that you will introduce Star Trek to a new generation. Combined with the new movie I hope we will have new tv series and movies in the future. Thank you for not giving in to the role player simulationists and making a game that will appeal to everyone.

I'm pleased that they showed that they are committed to making this a game for many to enjoy, as opposed to making it for only the hardcore fans of Trek and one preferred play style. It will help insure the game is the success that is deserves to be.

I'm pleased they're committed to making it a Star Trek game instead of a game wrapped in a Star Trek skin, but have shown signs of knowing it's sometimes also important to let fun game play take precedence when the alternative would lead to a boring and dull feature that very few would avail themselves of.

I'm extremely pleased that we've been informed that they've learnt many lessons from the CoX games, and are striving to give us variety in the away mission maps.

I'm also extremely pleased about the hints that have been dropped regarding a well thought out combat system that promises some depth to it, whilst also providing for those that aren't as combat oriented to still have great fun as well and not become frustrated.

What I'm getting more and more pleased about is that I'm more and more feeling that this game is in the proper hands.

Picking up this game in the first place.

I'm often harsh to the people who want to bash their efforts. I'm hurt by the way they poo poo on the things Cryptic tells us.

But I go way back playing Star Trek games, and I honestly think people would rather Star Trek go away than not measure up to their precious understandings of what Star Trek should be.

Well poo poo on them. I'm ready for the new era of Star Trek games, and I'm also having fun playing right now... I like what Beth produced too... Poo Poo on them, we're moving on, with or without them.

In fact I'm gonna go play some Star Trek pinball right now, and after that some EF2 or maybe Armada 2, I' taking a break from the TLG mod for Legacy....but I'm gonna be back at it soon.

I'm having fun and they are not.

I think their customization of alien races, including adding races yourself, is great. It allows us to simulate the full galaxy the likes of which the shows couldn't.

I also feel their designation of fleet owned stuff is right on. A starbase is a wonderful thing for a fleet to own. A big step up from the "Wow Guild Bank" for me.

I've tried pretty much every MMORPG out there, and I can tell you this: in my opinion, Cryptic is the best dev house Star Trek Online could hope to have. No, Cryptic won't get everything right. Yes, Cryptic will p!ss off everyone here, myself included, with some of the design decisions they'll make ...

... but it _won't_ be because Cryptic doesn't care about the game, the franchise, or its players.

I mean, for cripes sakes, they're even mining the non-canonical novel lines for good story bits. Yes, most Trek fans read and like _some_ of the novels, but would most of us be willing to review _all_ of them just to find possible good story material for the game? Most of us don't even like all of the Trek series in equal measure.

So, say what you want, but Cryptic's our best all-around bet for a Star Trek MMO made well, and made with love.

Anyone who wants to villify Cryptic for their efforts can keep sitting on the transporter room floor angrily chanting "Herbert!" because the universe refused to bow to their personal vision (LINK (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVG1KfcAWgY) see 4 minutes in). Go ahead, start some more "Herbert!" threads, if it makes you feel better ...

But I'm now convinced that, kilo for kilo, Cryptic is our best bet for a Star Trek MMORPG which could be truly fun, genuinely exciting, and undeniably Star Trek. I'm grateful for their presence on the project.

Amen to that. I think Cryptic deserves a hell of a lot more gratitude simply for even taking on this project, especially after Perpetual dropped the ball beyond belief. And to even try and follow in the footsteps of Gene Roddenberry takes more guts then any whiny Star Trek fan who wants to bash someone else's creativity on here because it doesn't fit their demand of how the Star Trek universe should be. Seriously, they picked one of the most expanisve, complex, long-running storylines ever, with one of the most fanatical fanbases ever, and people are still complaining. Sure, constructive criticism is always good, and helps everyone develop a better experience for all of us. But the point of the game is to have FUN. Not ***** and moan because you didn't get your way. After all, it is a game.
I look forward to the wonderful product that I know Cryptic put out, and I can't wait to have fun experiencing it.

The #1 thing they are doing right. Making STO a reality. No matter what I think we're all going to have understandable differing opinions of vision where the game translates from the source material.

So, even without Player Crews as my nitpick I'm pretty pleased with Cryptic right now and they seem to have a pretty relaxed Dev team that we've seen so far. And a relaxed Dev team by my meaning is usually a very good thing.

Yeah, I was a huge cryptic hater after CoX. But jack (and cryptic) have redeemed themselves since. I'm glad they're doing STO. I just wish I was able to be a part of the forums, so my voice could be heard. But too many people spouting uninformed, misinformed, or flat out ignorant statements, keep me from visiting these forums more than once or twice a month.

Maybe when it's closer to launch, and their likes are gone, I'll be able to return. Until then, yay npc crews, yay exploration, yay combat, yay cryptic, boo some fans that represent the minority yet don't realise it.

This is all making me happy too. Combat looks to be a varied experience, from the fast paced away team action to a more tactical ship experience, which is good. I like the idea that elements of ship combat can be automated too so that you can be either fiddling with everything on the fly or letting the computer handle it. In a way, that reflects different captaining (it's a word) styles as some will be more hands on where as others are happy to "leave it to the crew."

Cryptic are unlikely to take any designs or content from us. That's not just them, most (if not all) developers have the same policy as using outside content gets legally complicated. You can point them at existing Star Trek content and (along with the rest of us) make suggestions and voice opinions about what exists though, which is very helpful to them.

I have lurked on these forums for awhile but wanted to add my thoughts about the game. I am very excited and I can't wait. Soon as it comes out I am dropping the other MMO I play. They have been said already but I'll pile on my own answers:

+Steady stream of infomation - even if they are tidbits, it's awesome they are making a point to keep us informed.
+My own ship at the start, even if small.
+NPC Crews I can customize.
+Tactical space combat - YES! Exactly what I was hoping for.
+Create a race
+Their dedication to adding new content/planets on a regular basis to explore.
+Fast pasted ground/interior ship combat (I can't wait to play a Klingon ship and board a Fed ship to capture it. I'm hoping they include an option to hear your Klingon warriors sing songs of glory after a victory.)

I have to say that everything that I've seen come from Cryptic has been great for me,

NPC over Player Crews, I think this is the thing I'm most happy about, not try to start the debate up again, but being able to be in charge of my own game experience is really what I'm looking for.

Good flow of information - We always want more info and details but Cryptic has been good about giving a nice flow of information for us to talk about.

Tatical space combat - Thank you, I don't want to treat my starthips like an X-wing and just fly by making runs, I can work on my tatical abilities to be effective.

Ground combat - Faster and a good balance to the space combat.

Non-combat elements - Diplomacy, research, exploring how big these will be in the game will be great. I know I really looking forward to the space combat but if that was all the game really was I would get bored in a month or two, these other elements will make the game fun and interesting and really give you the "trek" experience.

Limited PVP - I'm not a huge pvp'er but the areas that you can pvp sound great and I can pvp or not if I feel like to a large degree.

Ship & Race Customazation - Not sure how much of this I will take advanatage of but it will be a really nice feature.

I know there must be more I like but I think that's a good start. I am so looking forward to this game coming out. :D
