View Full Version : Why I am giving up

1. Everyone a captain
I never wanted to be a captain or be in command. It's not canon. It's not Star Trek. Completely ridiculous. Obviously catering to a certain customer of which I am not.

2. Everyone has a starship
At it's highest point there were a couple hundred ships in StarFleet. This game will have thousands. It's not canon. It's not Star Trek. Completely ridiculous.

3. No RP server
The role play community for this game would have been the largest percentage of the customer base. Not having RP is again a backdoor way of telling me that this game is not being designed for people like me. RP servers had natural a way of serperating maturity levels of the players without insulting the player base. Not having an RP server really tells me that I am not your kind of customer.

4. No name restrictions
You can't tell me it's Star Trek if I am seeing Captain Pwn152 or ships named IKillllzYou.

5. Ship customization
Not canon. I am baffled by this. But at least it's in line with the tone of the game.

6. No community for people like me
Frankly without all the above, there won't be the kind players in this game that will be people I will be likely to have much in common with. It feels like a predominately younger crowd will like this game. I won't fit in.

7. Emphasis on combat
Sorry it's just not Star Trek. It was never about combat.

8. Starting Ranks too high
Looks like starting rank will be something like Lt.Commander. Makes me feel like I missed out on the first 15 years of my career.

9. Not able to serve on Epic star ships like Enterprise or bases like DS9.
And it doesn't look like this will ever be a part of the game.

In conclusion, I would have been fine with the lack of PC crews as a matter of just being too difficult to develop. In fact that reason for giving up isn't even on my list. It's the rest of the stuff. Frankly there isn't a single part of this game that appeals to me beyond the name. Every single expectation that I had going into this has been catagorically denied. And it's so early on. I just don't see why I should bother further

To Cryptic I say this. I hope you make a fantastic game that thousands of people adore and play for 10 years. But I don't think you have long time Star Trek fans in mind as your target audience. I think you have targeted the 12-25 year old demographic and I think you know that they want a lot of action and they want to be uber and they dont' want to grind like in most MMORPG's and they don't want to roleplay. That was the decision and well I think you will make a lot less money that way both at release and on recurring long term monthly subscription revenue, but I hope I am wrong.

The good news is since this game will be this way, I see no reason why someone else can't come along soon and make the game more along the lines of what I wanted since it's such a radical departure. So wish me luck.

I think you have very serious concerns. While I think it might be to early to think that some of what you said is in stone i fear the very same things you do.

I don't know why people in every game forum i have ever been on alway reply nasty to someone with real concerns. This wasn't a troll post so don't reply like your ten years old.

I will hold out and hope for the best but we know they will always target little kids and their "gime gime now now now" attention spans.

There, now all the fanboys can flame me too.;)

There is a party pooper, the idea of a mmo is to kill stuff and gain levels. I gather that this person wanted to find the secret to the universe or study a plants growth to gain levels.

For the gamers out there that will play this game. They are not all friendly. If you want to play with nice people get mario bros and play at home. The MMO world is not nice and is full of people that take it too seriously. That is what you are doing too. I do not think that your comments effect the community at all. If youwant to be on the enterprise or DS9 then go buy those platform games. Not everyone is going to want to be a captain and I am sure they will not have too.

Naming system is fine because you will always have that funny person out there that names themselves. EatMyTorpedo or PhaserPWN. I always liked this one Corpse. That is alwasy funny to see "you have been killed by Corpse" or "your ship has just been topedoed by Corpse". A Corpse killed you.

MMORPG's like this will always be what you makeem. I tend to agree with many of the points you make, but none of these are deal-breakers for me. I know there will be a massive RP community who, despite the USS PWNZ00R!!11!! being in orbit with them, will get on just fine. Strict RP servers have never worked. WoW is a perfect example of that.

There is plenty of community for people like you, contrary to what you may believe, both here and now and certainly in-game when it is released, and I feel quite certain that if combat is not what you care to emphasize, then it won;t be. I certainly don't plan to be the first Vulcan to join the Klingon High Council.

At any rqate, time will tell in what direction, and to what degree this game will go. I find it illogical that Cryptic would, in a game whose very genre begins with the word massivley, alienate such a major portion of the potential audience as you suggest.

I suggest you wait, and see. Along with the rest of us.

I tend to agree with the OP here.

Thus far, I am becoming less and less impressed with what I see and hear about STO.

When I first heard that Cryptic would be picking up the ball where PE had dropped it, I was overjoyed. It was potentially a fresh start for this MMO. When I first heard of a Star Trek MMO being made, I envisioned a game that gave the player the experience of being a part of Starfleet or the Klingon Empire, or the Romulan Empire or being a basic private citizen in the Trek universe.

So when Cryptic announced they had it, I was thinking "Man, a new studio is picking this up, so maybe we get a fresh start for STO, a whole new line of thinking, and finally a chance to get the game we all originally envisioned that PE was unable to deliver."

Then, as I sat in the unveiling ceremony in Las Vegas, I knew that my original thoughts were a pipe dream. This is not a fresh start for STO. Instead, it's a step backwards. When I saw the gameplay trailer, when I heard no PC crews, when I heard console and PC, I knew this game would amount to an oversimplified console space shooter.

We've all heard how great exploration will be, we've heard this game will attempt to hold true to canon. But honestly, can anyone look at the information we have on hand, and see anything but combat, war and conflict?

So there will be no revolutionary MMO coming out under the name Star Trek. Like it or not, it looks like STO will be about 70-80% combat, with a sprinkling of exploration and diplomacy, probably tied down to leveling missions.

I tried to give Cryptic the benefit of the doubt, but with everyone over there talking combat, with the lead designer being a combat guy, and without any sort of evidence that suggests STO will be about more than just combat, it has become much harder to be excitied about this game.

Looks like I'll have to wait for the next STO, perhaps by another company, before I get to seek out new life and new civilizations, because in the end, I feel this version of STO will be all about going boldly into combat with phasers and photon torpedoes blasting away, which in the end, is not what Trek is about.

Sorry to hear that Cryptic isn't putting out the game you wanted...maybe somewhere else down the line.

I think you are a tad pessimistic, but that's just me. The game you are saying you want sounds like it might be fun...but I'll enjoy this one for what it is too.

Yes thank you Cryptic for making a Star Trek game. Star Trek is in trouble right now with falling popularity. It is with this game that you will introduce Star Trek to a new generation. Combined with the new movie I hope we will have new tv series and movies in the future. Thank you for not giving in to the role player simulationists and making a game that will appeal to everyone.

They simply cannot cater to everyone. And sadly your it.

Myself I want to captain my own starship and I can stand back and realize how stupid and boring it would be to sit in engineering or some console on a space station. Seriously get over it already or at least post in the sticky so you don't generate 10000 flames.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you don't agree with the route they are taking and have made public since day on, make your own game. This is their product and they pay for the license of the IP. So to put it bluntly your opinion in this matter does not count, nor does mine.

I'm sorry that you've reached a decision so early in the game's development without all the information that will be coming in the future. I'm sure that somewhere in our plans for STO there will be things that appeal to you and many others who may feel the same. There are many things yet to be revealed.

I'm going to close this, before anymore flames erupt.
