View Full Version : Please don't let us destroy the game

Assuming that this game is good I see some potential already for us to really destroy the whole experience. But I really hope we cannot name our ships names which are just ridiculous. I don't want to see a ship named 'ilovepizza' in the 'Lolipop Fleet' commanded by Captain Pwn154. Please for the love of all things Star Trek make a filter and a system for people to report such names and get rid of them.

Well you are going to have to accept that there are players out there that are only buying this game to do exactly that, and unless Cryptic uses mandatory Name generators (with custom names having to be submitted for pre approval like in Pirates of the Caribbean Online.) you will see Captspanky of the U.S.S Azzsniffa. Every time this subject is brought up you get a slew of attention seekers screaming at the top of their lungs that if they can't make the namezors they wantzors then they won't play…err I mean playzors.

Yes, but destroy the whole experience for who exactly? Star Trek Fans? Hard Core Trekkies? RP'ers? Gamers? All of the above? None of the above? Why is it that every few days there's someone else poppiing p and going on about how custom ship/toon naming is going to destroy the game?
If ANYTHING is going to destroy this game, it's going to be the fact that it's set in the 25th century in the Star Trek universe (and all the ideology and values that goes with it), but is being played by people with a 21st century mindset and value system (which makes us practically barbarians by comparison).

I really wish Cryptic would just tell us if they intend to include restrictive names or not. I don't really understand why their intent would need to be a secret.
Problem with only using appropriate names is that there only are so many of them. Deep down I agree with you, there are all sorts of names I would not want to see on a starship; but the name that would bug me the most is the one exactly like the name on my ship.

This is not a new discussion. It was filled with pedantic arguements from people who can't accept that not everyone will want to be restricted in their naming choices to names that sound (or are) canon. Here it is, go thereso this can be locked:

This is my 10th MMO and I have seen "panic threads" in all of them. Rest easy my friend. Its way too early for worry. Besides, Cryptic is a good MMO company so I 'm sure they've thought of most of that.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaase let's not bring this up again. I've always thought that you had a pretty good take on the issue, but a lot of people don't. A load of people just want NO restrictions, and think that a starship named lllllllpppppppphhhhhhhhhkkkkkkkkkkk would just add oh so much to the game. Then you have the other side that would rather have pre-assigned naming and so be it if we see 500 other ships with our name. People just aren't willing to compromise on what they think should be done and so long as Cryptic remains tight-lipped we'll be arguing over it like little children for the next 10-18 months (assuming a reasonable release date).

I came to this thread hoping that it was actually a request for the devs not to be bullied by us into making decisions that would limit the game, which is why I went off on one in my previous post because in the end I got a little fed up with that last thread as it felt like most people weren't willing to compromise and that names had to be exactly as they wanted them.

Bullied is an interesting word to use for this humble request.
I'm from the legal industry so in my experience if you don't raise an objection you waive it. I'm here objecting to ridiculous names. This is not a bully type request and I don't think it would take anything away from the game.
And also I don't care if there are other threads on this. I wanted to feel important and make my own. So :p

The jerks will win they always do.Please post a link to one of these posts saying if they can't name their ships what they want they won't play. I must have missed them, because I've never seen one. It would be an interesting read.
What I have seen is many many people saying that maybe what ships and characters are named isn't really very important. That other's imposing their personal opinions on what names are and aren't proper is pretty questionable (and some have said arrogant as well), and maybe it's better to let those that want to have a bit of fun with their chosen names as opposed to smothering them with rules.
I have seen that most agree that there should be a line drawn at using offencive names.

I wasn't actually referring to ship naming, there are lots of things players are being vocal about. I should be more specific about what I'm being vague about. ;)

Chances are we'll just get Standard servers and RP servers, RP having naming restrictions as per WoW (badly enforced) and LotRO (quite well enforced), I'd be happy with that :D

Can we get a Vulcan to analyze this paradox?

All servers will be the same. (assuming they're going with separate servers)
It's in the FAQ.

It's in the FAQ.Actually, they never ruled out RP servers, just separate PvP and PvE rule set servers.
Will there be PvP, PvE and RP rule set servers?
There will not be separate servers for PvP and PvE rulesets....

If the game was not good then we could not possibly destroy it because it would already be destroyed.

I really wish Cryptic would just tell us if they intend to include restrictive names or not. I don't really understand why their intent would need to be a secret.
Cryptic already had a filter policy AND an in-game anonymous reporting mechanism in City of Heroes/Villains, both of which were designed to keep the level of crass stupidity to a minimum -- or at least ensure that it was short-lived.
It all worked (and works) surprisingly well on the CoX servers I've played on. Particularly the community self-policing aspect. Unintentional goofiness is generally tolerated, but the crass, and the intentionally, offensively stupid, tend to get reported quickly and often until they are EULA'd out of existence, and their avatar's names genericized.
I can't see why Cryptic wouldn't implement similar systems in Star Trek Online, and I fully expect that they will.

Wouldn't it be great if when you logged into the game, a Star Trek movie started playing and you see a movie theater backdrop pop in complete with some guy in a red jumpsuit and two robot pals and you pontificate till the end of time?

In Starfleet, a Captain is appointed to a ship. He/she do not own it.
I just hope it will be the same in the game. I don't care if my ship's name is Stargazer or Lexington or whatever.
If you want to play in the ST universe, you should accept this fact.
So a player should not be able to name a ship.
Maybe some races could be able to name their ships (like the Ferengi).

I truly hope for the same thing. But that's only half of the solution. They actually have to respond to complaints with more than a "thank you for your report. we will take all appropriate actions" type answer.
Why exactly we should even have to ask for enforced naming restrictions is a mystery to me. What it takes away from those who want to name their ships and captains inappropriate names pales when compared with what is gained by an immersive game experience. IMHO. :)

Good, don't let em play, don't wanna play with those people. Names like that are, quite simply, a form of harrassment. SWG before SOE totally gave up and destroyed the thing had a random name generator and a strict naming policy. Sure, later on it became just like wow, but when it was in it's height of popularity people could submit names for violating the policy and a csr, when they got to it, if it was found in violation would contact the player to work out a change, and if they weren't on would change it for em letting em know why it was changed.

I think we're likely going to see the norm in mmos as far as immersion breaking names and the like. That said I would like them to spend some time in thinking out name filters and generators if we don't get to choose our own for things like ships.

There are two ships, USS xXx DaRK Kn1Ght xXx, and USS Renault Clio. Do you want both names replaced, or just the one?
