I dont think I could EVER spend real money for things that I would get in the game, however if they did not have a monthly fee I would try it out. Where do you get your info from anyway....

just for the record, what you hear about other games has absolutely nothing to do with STO. and also for the record, the devs have not given the specifics on how STO's subscription system will work, but they have made absolutely NO mention of paying for specific items. if anything, this thread is just perpetuaing a false rumor.

Before Perpetual's canceling STO, some of their "top officials" wanted to go the route of selling in-game items, which apparently caused another rift between their developers.

This may be what he heard.

Yeah, like phaser said, it was suggested that would happen in the original Perpetual version of the game. I don't think STO is going that route. I hope not :)

Easy there cowboy, it was a valid question :)

Actually this was not a rumor about another game, it was actually reported by ShackNews about STO during the collapse of the PE plan:

Perpetual has been acquired by new ownership, reportedly a media company looking to use Star Trek Online to make its first major inroads into the video game market. Along with the acquisition comes a partial retargeting of Star Trek Online to what our source describes as a "more casual" experience, one which may potentially eschew subscription fees in favor of the practice of charging real money for optional in-game items, a practice popularized by various Korean MMOs.
http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/50065

But don't fear... I think most of this "casual game" nonsense was born of disgruntled PE staff who were being anonymously quoted in those days as "reliable inside sources"... the fan sites featured even juicier rumors and details.

What KIND of rift are we talking here? Stable wormhole, or a rift in the space-time continuum?

Seriously? Yeah let's play favourites with our player base, that won't mad at aaaaaall. </sarcasm>

pay per play or pay by item type of systems create a very unstable class type system.

What I mean by that is it is hard for a person who is say below average income to compete with someone who is far above the average income. A good example would be a player in say Malaysia vs. a player from an upperclass family in Engalnd, the US or others. A Malaysian ringgit is worth a fraction of a english pound or american dollar, that means the poor malaysian would need to spend 3 to 6 times as much of his income to be on par with the american or brit. That is just not fair play in my mind.

lol 3 to 6 times :D .... more like 10 to 15

While exact pricing is unconfirmed, I will bet my sovereign class starship that it will be pay monthly. I don't think Cryptic will even consider making it pay for items.

seeing as how 99% of MMOs are pay per month, plus cryptics other games are pay per month, STO is most likely pay per month as well.

There's probably going to be a monthly fee. I only say that becuase of that it takes to keep servers up and running. It can take millions to make sure servers don't loose power. You figure you have a place for the servers then you supply it UPS power so that if the city takes a power dip the servers don't drop out. Well I don't know if servers from games do that but on wallstreet we do. Then you have contracts to maintain those systems. Now if you calculate: Design teams, writter, and everything it takes to run a buisness 24hrs with game support. Most of this will = monthly fee.
This is just my oppinion.

And i hope it will be cheaper if i pay a year or more in advance. I always tend to buy the game, see whats it like in the test period and then either buy it for a year or forget it.

Check a currency convertor next time please, I did. 1 Ringgit = 0.301 USD or 0.16 British pounds. meaning 3 to 6 times almost exaclty

Do you want to say they have same income as US citizens? ofc not
US social checks are larger than their paychecks

I wouldn't have a problem with any game selling in-game items for real cash as long as the items sold were just fluff items and pure aesthetic enhancing things, and offered no advantages in any way.

So for example, to me it would be ok if they sold cool looking/unique decals for ships, or gnarly looking bat'leths that you couldn't acquire in-game, or special furniture for ship and starbase interiors, etc etc.

It wouldn't be ok to me if they sold uber photon torpedoes, +10 to damage bat'leths, high speed repair crews, etc etc.

If I have to pay anything extra to get some "in-game" item then it's not worth it. After I purchase the game then my sub fees and any expansions I buy should be the only "real" money I spend for this game ever. This would be a deal breaker for me.

I wouldn't. I like to think that when I buy a game, I pay for the whole thing. I live with subs for MMOs because, in a sense, they are never complete games and servers, updates and mods all cost money. It's why I also don't buy the little packs some games have on Xbox live.

That was one reason of many that game failed. THIS version of sto is gonna be alot better and were pretty safe with everything.

Also, with the monthly fee, we'll be paying for the servers and content so stuff should definately be free.

I'm not sure about the term "in-game items" do you mean items like Ships? Mugs? Characters? Etc.? Because if you look at Blizzard, they've been "selling" in-game items for a while now. Starting with their WoW-Card game, and now they have action figures, swords, and a whole bunch of other "authorized" WoW replicas.

I would assume that depending on the relative success of STO, that we could probably expect to see the like of that sort of stuff as well.

hes referring to "micro transactions" ie having to pay for an upgraded item like a stronger warp core or something.

That happens with almost all MMO's. If you go on ebay at any given time there's tons of in game stuff for sale for any MMO thats already out there. People actully make a living playing these games and saleing stuff on Ebay.

thaks for clearing this up for me ppl, i can finaly put my mind to ease. Like some one else wrote i do not mind games selling "junk" or unice decorative items but if they start selling weapons and other equipment that gives a advantage to players whit more money then i will not even bother trying the game

Ugh, I seriously hope they just stick with the monthly fees. I hate games that make you buy stuff in-game. I wanna play ST:O, not freakin' Second Life.
