Federation Credit (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Federation_credit)
Like everything else in the movies, they tend not to follow the actual statements of the series very well.

There has to be a economy for the fed, its only earth that got turned into some form of communism utopia by the power of replicators. Every base need can be provided by replicators after all.
However on a galactic scale where thousands different species with different values come together there has to be an economic structure, and do not forget that there are things that do not grow on replicators alone.
To say theres no money in the fed is illusionary, screw roddenbery on that.

It could be that the currency used is merely a bartering table. Like:
1,000 credits will get you 5 kilotons of Tritanium.
2,000 credits will get you 100 isolinear chips
5 liters of warp plasma will give you 200 credits
ect....
It's basically a way to convert one good or service into another in a standardized format, but not have it based off anything. I know, I know, that's what currency is supposed to do. But in today's market, the value is based on a complex system of imports and exports. What if it wasn't? What if it was just set by the Federation?

Thats would be the reason why half the universe says "fck you people!" whenever a Fed-Credit card raises its ugly head...

The Federation probably does not bother with hard currency, instead relying on secure data transmissions.
That is always how I took the various "Federation has no money" comments to be intended.
In all probability, especially with the advent of widespread replicator technology, the Federation credit is based on a sum of energy, rather than any amount of physical material. It is, after all, energy that Federation support systems - planetbound as well as in space - are most reliant upon. Thus, the generation, storage, transfer, and utilisation of energy in various forms would be the backbone of the Federation economy.
And therefor, the most logical basis for any measure of private or public exchange.

Actually, I think the Federation trades in resources and technology when it conducts barter.

Federation uses credits mostly for trading with non federation people as I understand it. Those credits can basically be exchanged for federation goods or resources.

Since nothing about what kind of currency will be in the game has been revealed so far, it is hard to say what the economy will be like but I am certainly looking forward to finding out!
As I remember he did not say they did not use it but that it was just different then it was in the time line they was in.
