Kill 150 borg cubes
Make 150 first contacts
I hope this wont be here it serves no purpose at all.
Hmm good post, i'm guessing from previous 360 rpg type games you'll get achievements for reaching ranks of Lt and Commander and finishing quests or being captain of your 1st ship stuff like that.

Not true. Achievements are a part of every game on the 360, and the points you get from them are added to your "Gamer Score"

Valve also puts in Achievements for it's games ever since playtesting for HL2- EP2. (People thought killing all the grubs was an achievement)
Halo-2 did it first so that's understandable. But so far they've put in a very nice system with Team Fortress 2 where you get new weapons when you unlock a specific number of achievements for a class.

Correct. But Steam has profiles per game, which aren't available to others, and give you no reward other then the odd weapon in TF2 or the satisfaction of knowing you did it in HL2-EP2

CoH had badges for doing certain things and going certain places. I don't think STO will have that many 360 achievements as I believe they have to be approved by Microsoft and will always add up to 1000 points for the game.

I was being sarcastic, in case no one noticed. :D Just about any game created has "Achievements" of some kind. This thread is about Xbox 360 Achievements, which you won't find anywhere else.

I'm not talking about the 'weapon things'. I'm talking about Xbox 360 Achievements. Which are all added to your Xbox profile, creating a total "Gamerscore" that everyone can view.

Any game that uses the XBox live system (Halo 2 for PC is one of them) will have a profile. However, as was mentioned, Mass Effect has achievements, they just aren't uploaded anywhere, nor do they contribute to any kind of "gamers score".

I think achievements might lead to some odd game choices:
Captain Bob: Why are you taking your science ship into Borg space, Captain Bert?
Captain Bert: I need the Borg Basher achievement.
Captain Bob: Good hunting, try not to get assimilated too quickly.
or:
Klingon B'ob: How is curing all these people of Terrilian Warts bringing glory to the Empire? Take your warship and find your honour!!
Klingon B'ert: But I need the Plague Stopper achievement.

Sure it does. Some of us like to collect shiny things. And what's wrong with that? Heck, online games are already including their own, in-game equivalents. Like, oh, Cryptics prior MMO, City of Heroes. Badges GALORE.
i personaly as someone who will play the MMO on pc dislike the idea of playing together with PS3 and 360 player. and so i'm not interested in any achievements.
in my view it would destroy a lot of the atmosphere in a roleplaying game.

Dead wrong. I have 490/1000 gamerscore for Mass Effect right now. 19 achievements out of 45 - and I don't have the expansion material yet, which probably includes a few more achievements (at least one, I'd imagine).

Achievements haven't broken atmosphere in any game I've played, be it 360 ones in Mass Effect or badges in CoH.
As for your first statement, you have to realise that that can work both ways. Maybe console players don't want to play with PC users. This isn't ment as a personal attack on you or anyone else (welcome to the boards btw), but it is something I keep seeing in a minority of users here: but that kind of snobbery can work both ways and is (as far as I can tell) unjustified. It also seems that people are trying to bully Cryptic by refusing to play if a console version is out there.
I would like to see the whole PC v console arguement die the secret and unlamented death that abomination really deserves.

Abit of a silly post really, check the name of the thread 1st.
Back to achievements, i'm pretty sure they would include negative ones as i have many of them myself. I'd like one for discovering a planet or race for the 1st time.

I concur. It's ridiculous when people actually say they won't play if Consoles are on the same servers. Talk about a stuck up attitude. But the less people we have like that in the game, the better. :)

Indeed, i just don't see where the hate comes from, we're all gamers why does it matter what platform your on. I play on both PC and 360, but the fact of the matter is my 360 cost me £200 where as upgrading or buying a new PC to the same if not better spec than my 360 is just not possible for me.
Plus the achievement system has been the best thing about the 360 for me it's pretty much given every game i've played so far huge replay value.

Yes and no.
Let's take Mass Effect. The Achievements are duplicated wihtin the game, and provide you with various benefits for future playthroughs.
For example, my first time through the game, I went through over 90% of the available content at the time ... as such, I got the "Completionist" achievement. Now, in any future M.E. games I play, I enjoy a +10% boost to earned Experience Points. ^_^

double post. oops.
well i'm sorry if someone felt attacked personaly, i didn't want to hurt anybody.
i my view there only could be problems in the way that there could be differences in how players with different plattforms could act together. i think you can agree that you have lots more possibilities to (inter-)act if you use a keyboard. i just don't really know how to bring all the players together, give everybody same possibilities.
i didn't wrote that because i don't like 360 or PS3 player, i do have a 360 too and played Mass Effect and for sure other games and liked the achievement system.
maybe i should have said "... in a MMORPG" but i think there will be some people just trying to be better than everyone else, compare others with themselves by using the achievements and that would make me angry because it kid of destroys the fun i want to have, the fun because i play.
_Pax_
08-31-2008, 10:18 AM
Mass Effect for PC?
No.
But then, you didn't specify for PC, now did you? ^_^
By the by? The achievements for the 360 profile are exactly the same ones you earn in-game, to get bennies for future playthroughs. All the profile does (for M.E.), is echo those achievements and assign a gamerscore value to them.

on X-box 360 it would be acheivments and badges.

Um. You do realise that your 360 has several USB ports, right? And that you can plug a standard, $5 Wal-Mart-special USB keyboard into one of them, and it'll work (if the game is programmed to use a keyboard, at least) ...? :)

All they have to do is, assign a Gamerscore value (even if it's just "0") to the Xbox version of the badge/achievement/etc. And voila, Xbox Live Achievements. ^_^

On the interatction note, that's something they must be tackling with Champions. Despite being a superhero game, it's probably the best indication of how ST:O will work as it's also by Cryptic and is also cross-platform.

It would be good if it is, that achievements are included they are a nice touch, the ones in Mass Effect in particular as some of those provided minor bonuses in game too.. though of course if such a system was included it would need to be translatable to the PC release too for fairness.

i personally like to have them as away to track what you have done in the game.I know this dose not apply to this game but things like finish the game on regular ,veteran, hardened.
And then possibly have a different system in the game for unlocking stuff.
Like cod 4 you do xbox only achievements that do not affect the game and they appear on you xbox profile and dash board but you also get the challenges that earn you points to unlock in game stuff. Then it dose not affect anything if only the xbox has the achievement system.
