View Full Version : Are Klingons still in the Starfleet Academy in 2409...?

Given the "cooling" of the Klingon Empire - UFP relationship already established by Cryptic as a major change in the Star Trek univese by 2049, I was wondering if any Klingons are still serving in Starfleet at STO launch?
Hopefully this question will be answered as the "Path to 2049" story arc progresses.
I have just re-watched "The Emissary" (TNG, S2) and find Worf a fascinating character - I would like to have a Klingon on my bridge crew - but could one also choose to be Klingon ship captain on the side of Starfleet?
I dont see why they would not be Just becuse Not every one in the Empire would like to fight The Fed.

I guess it's up to the developers if they allow it, but I would guess not. They will want to make sure Starfleet and the Empire are distinct and that there are advantages and disadvantages to both. If Starfleet ships can have Klingons and thereby access to Klingon weapons and equipment, it gives you one less reason to choose the Klingons at creation.

If you look at it, there was never really a proliferation of Klingons in Starfleet Academy. Of those Klingons that we know went through the Academy (somewhat), both of them had very large Human influences. Worf was raised by humans, and ex-Starfleet too while B'elanna was half-human. B'elanna's daughter, Miral is three-quarters human and was raised in Starfleet.
Jack did mention that there would be some Klingon captains of Starfleet ships, and vice-versa, so perhaps there may be, just not an overabundance of them.

Technically speaking a Federation Klingon would have no more access to Klingon weapons and Equipment than anyone else. They would be part of the Federation not the Empire.

I could see a Klingon Purity movement in the road to 2409 where those with any alien influences, be they genetic or environmental, are shunned by the Klingons in the starting area. Every Klingon created with non Klingon attributes would automatically (through game mechanic) lose the ability to start in the Klingon Empire as would those "pure bloods" who choose a Federation start.
The Federation is more inclusive and open to having them in the ranks, but the Klingon faction will have racial requirements.
This is pure speculation, but could be a way to work it.

Actually, i believe Jack said there were Klingons in the Federation and humans in the Klingon Empire. So, I think that answers the question. I am sure Worf was not the only Klingon in the Federation at the time.

I've not heard that, could you post a link? I wasn't giving gospel answers, just what I thought would be the case.

Well I agree but as others have stated... Klingons were rare even during a peace time in the federation. I think what we're more likely to see is half-klingons like Belanna (Voyager)
On the other hand I don't see why you couldn't have a klingon on your federation ship... remember along the Klingon-Federation border you have mixed planets and like the Cardassian Nutural zone perhaps some klingons decdied to go with the federation when things started to heat up.... unlikely yes, but impossible no.

I'm sure more than a few Klingons would have migrated to Federation space during the time of piece between the two Empires and vice versa.

There are sissies and people who don't want to get with the program in every society. So, I imagine Klingons who'd rather be artists or cooks or whathaveyou than Warriors would have become cultural refugees to the Federation, eventually having offspring of their own who, because of their parents stigma could not return to the Empire. So, they would seek out Starfleet.

This is what i see as the most common explanation(as far as player written back stories go) if they are allowed in the Federation.

Since STO will have a build your own species system, limiting any of the known species to one factions would be pointless.

if the plan holds true, that the klingons and federation are at odds (not necessarily war) then id doubt klingons would be going to starfleet

I think that this question will definitely be answered by some of the storyline updates, but I am hoping that it is possible to play a Klingon aligned with the Federation because that would present some great opportunities for roleplay.

Agreed wholeheartedly. I'd love to play as a Klingon in Starfleet and don't doubt that it will be possible at some point in the game's lifespan.

Of coarse, there was doubtless imigration both ways when they were freindly, and not all of them would return when relations went hostile.
