In the webcast, it was alluded that we would be able to capture other ships.

Just a quick thought (if this was discussed, oops) ---- Any word on being able to capture starbases?

Yeah, I didn't think about that. That would be pretty huge, but not unheard of. Maybe this could be the focal point of huge PvP faction wars? Or major story engagements?

if u could do that for pvp that would be amazing but hard to actually do lol

Agreed. Might be fun to plant a flag on Ds9 though. You'll find my headquarters at Quark's

This would add an interesting element to the PvP struggle for territory control, and it would actually be fitting if the setting is as aggressive as it looks in the future. Perhaps only limited to "neutral" stations in disputed space which, if controlled by a faction, provides additional resources for the Federation or Empire.

I am pretty sure one of the things with territory control of PvP zones will be fights on starbases. I can just imagine it, part of the fleet beaming aboard to fight it out, while other part fighting other ships in space.

It would make sense, the capture of starbases does have some roots in Trek canon, such as Ds9 during the Dominion war.

I can see it now, on board DS9...

"Federation has the flag"
"Federation dropped the flag"
"Klingon Empire returned the flag"
"Klingon Empire scores"
"Federation has the flag"

:D

Hehe I don't think DS9 will be a disputed territory though, one since Bajor is on the opposite side away from the Klingon Empire, and two, DS9 was firmly in control of Bajor with Federation support, if I recall.

In either case, I dunno what it will be, but I am sure there will have to be some ground assault to occur as far as resource gathering in PvP zones for control go.

I think it be in a PvP area and unless you make alliances you never hold th station yourself

IE All Klingon
all Humans

etc etc

Well if we are able to expand the borders of our factions, taking stations will be a have too... including, some kind of ai construction of new starbases in newly explored territory

For the attacks on starbases to work without being lame ships would have to stay outside in space when players beamed in for the ground assault. Maybe have npc commander maintain control so the ship isn't completely defensless. If they disappeared after the player beamed onboard it would become nothing more than a race to knock down part of the shields and beam in.

I think people keep making a broad mistake. Faction crontrol is not racial control. The Federation comprises over 200 member worlds, and thus a lot of different races, just like the Klingons have multiple worlds within their Empire and probably many different races as well.

The ability to capture starbases would be interesting, but because it doesn't seem like the game's focus will be on starbases I doubt this would be a possibility.

I like the OPs idea.

I think PVP in STO would best be set up in an RVR format, where territory dynamically changes hands based on several conquer conditions. Destroying or capturing a starbase in a certain sector could be one of those.
