I know some games allow this, but I don't really know how huge of a programming nightmare this is. I like the idea though if it is doable.
Personally nothing says epic MMO like Wagner! theatrical, cinematic (even before there was cinema), dramatic, powerful evocative Wagner.

I think thats a pretty good idea, would be fun to be in battle with the Klingons or the borg or something with the flight of the valkyries in the background.. would be like playing frontier on the amiga all over again.. those were the days......

You could just turn down the game music volume and just listen to your CD changer ;) Civ 4 had this option and I thought it was good, but like you, I don't know what kind of a programing nightmare that would be. I've only made a Tic-Tac-Toe text based C++ game, ha! Not even close to this.
I'm sure they'll pick fine music though.

I know later patches of everquest had a "winamp" plugin that allowed you to listen to your music while in game.
But if they build this game capable of being played in windows mode really third party programs or plug-ins probably won't be necessary, at least not ones that are directly used in game.
But I really would have no problem being able to listen to a an opera at warp 9 while my data pad was bouncing around on my desk cause of my stereo lol.

This would be an interesting feature, but hopefully the music in the game is good enough so that this isn't a concern!
