do you think they should incorporate player relationships or will something like that be RP only?

Online relationships are somethng that are typically RP'd between players. If you mean an NPC love interest, no i do not think that should occur.

I agree on the NPC love interest but I think it would be cool if ingame you could have a relationship and get married and maybe get shared quarters on the fleet starbase or something. I just think it would be a neat thing to do.

That would be something plaers would have to decide for themselves and not the company itself. I know UO experimented with that line of thought for a while, but they steered away from it as it created too many problems for the company itself.

Marriages and such can be easily handled by the players, and have been for quite sometime actually. As far as sharing quarters on a starbase or something, eh, you are wandering into something else there, though we don't know if crew quarters for Fleet starbases will be possible.

Would make an interesting, KIrk-ish way of solving some missions.

I agree, it would indeed.

Id rather focus on other things than a relationship but thats just me. If others like then it should be in the game. The NPC relationships actually sound more appealing to me than one with another real player.

NPC relationships would certainly be another level of AI interaction and Kirk style diplomacy has been mentioned. I like the idea in principle, but it would be hard to not make it tacky. It's also a potential PR nightmare, look at the flak Bioware got for Mass Effect, although one of the people involved did apologise after she actually played it for herself.

If Cryptic want to do it, then I'm for it but its by no means mandatory.

bioware got no flack. the only controversy was from FOX and as we all know......well, LOL at fox.

and its really not hard to make a good relationship with an NPC, obviously it cant be a real life relationship but im sure it can be done fine

It wasn't just Fox, though they were the driving force behind it. We both know Fox is less reliable than the average comic book for news (especially when Marvel make Stephen Colbert the next President), but you'd be amazed at how many people actually get their news from it.

I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying it's extra effort (especially to do well) and I already want them to push back the frontiers of Artificial Intelligence for my crew.

I will have my moon on a stick!

Or you could log off and get a real girlfriend. People who date and get married to online avatars have something wrong with them, imo.

I tried real life, it's over-rated.

Leave the relationships to RP

Congrats!!!! Sorry about the nastyness though. Sure you will make it through. If you need to chat though feel free to PM me or check my profile I got MSN and yahoo. Sometimes I wish I was still part of the single crowd. Hope everything works out for ya.

Relationships in a game though? Keep it RP if thats what people want.

I would agree with that if Kirk hadn't nailed every alien chick he came across - no pun intended.

umm....this is an rpg? "role playing game"

what u do in ur life has nothing to do with the characters life. in the game you role play your character. thats the point.

seriously i dont see why you are so critical of something. you seem really close minded

Well RELATIONSHIPS are a very fundamental part of the whole Star Trek Canon.

Whether merely:

Close Friendships like say Picard/Riker, Archer/Trip, Nog/Jake and Bashir/O'Brien.

or

Family like Sarek/Spock, Ben/Jake Sisko and Beverley/Wesley Crusher.

or

Romantic love affairs (and marriage) like Riker/Troi, Odo/Kira, Ben Sisko/Casidy Yates, Worf/Jadzia and Bashir/Ezri

or indeed,

Rivals with a grudging respect for each other like Quark/Odo

Retionships have always played a major role in the STAR TREK universe, so the idea of incorporating them (especially romantic relationship as I think the OP was getting at) into STO should not be so lightly dismissed.

Oh this brings up an interesting point. Since Champions Online will let each character design their Archenemy. It would be amazing if ST:O would let each of us create our own Khan! :D

I think that, in general, player relationships should be kept to roleplaying, but I wouldn't mind seeing some kind of function that allows others to see who a character's significant other is in their profile.

The big issues with online relationships comes down to Game Rating.

MMORPG's will shy away from "officially" sponsoring relationships as long as they want to be appealing to the younger set, and STO appears to do so if Jack's response to the little girl in the Vegas clip is any indication.

While I agree that some limited level of "official" relationships is possible, why take the risk? Players have formed these relationships in the past with no prompting from the developers. This goes all the way back to MUD/MUSH, let alone visual MMO's.

You could get married in SWG. It just required the exchange of rings. I don't think it did anything more than state that each person was married to the other. Nothing too over the top or complicated, but certainly an aid to RP if that is what you want to do.

Because even in a game you still can't get a girl? ;)

I kid, I kid. :D

I deserved it too. I shouldn't have posted that. I apologize to anyone I may have offended.

I would worry about the player that wants a NPC love interest.

I think anything that can enhance the experience should be used. It would be totally up to the player but the option should be there. The more options and choices the more real the experience will feel. I don't necessarily mean realistic.

Many games are simply choice A: Kill enemy. Some are more elaborate and have B:Negotiate. So why not have C: er well negotiate differently. Guess what whenever you see Kirk pulling on his boot that was option C during the commercial break.

I doubt you offended anyone with it. If you did, oh well, guess they shouldn't offend so easily!

Depends on the NPC. If I find Admiral Janeway, or possibly even Admiral Seven, well, I'll be working my way up the chain of command :)

Luckily I'm joking lol

Something like that is actually what I had in mind.
