What i wanted to know is do you have to have your own ship, because i would rather be an engineer or a navigator for a friends ship rather than command my own vessel would this be possible?

If this is possible could you have a large ship completely operated by many players acting out each different role that is in the movies?

Because i think that would be good for factions, and if someone wanted to leave one crew they could be well know for being good at what they do and another commander might recruite them.

Ehh well i think everyone would own their own ship and be a captain because they didnt say your main position would be something other than captain ...but you can have a 2nd career like engineering or exploration.

Every player will command their own ship, but they will have specializations that allow them to perform certain tasks, perhaps similar to those pointed out in the first post in this thread.

I'm new and I'm also sure that this has been asked but I've been unable to find it, so. From what I have seen, you will only have access to either Federation or Klingon ships, yet could be of many races. So are the standard races allowed(Human,Klingon, Orion, Andorian, Gorn, Borg, etc?

It would also seem to me that all would start with a small ship and then either earn promotion and/or purchase, canive their way to larger ships.

Borg no.
Everyone else: Yes.

Everyone commands their own ship. We do know that as it has been mentioned regularly. You can read about it in the FAQ (http://www.startrekonline.com/faq) specifically;

Will everyone be the Captain of their own ship?
Yes, but you will have to earn the responsibility and skill to command larger and more powerful vessels. Remember, in Star Trek as well as naval tradition, whoever commands the ship is the "Captain," even if it is not your current rank.

And

Can I play something other than a Captain like a Doctor or an Engineer?
Everyone is a Captain, (remember, if you command a ship, you are automatically a Captain), and you will command a crew, but that does not limit your role. Your character will still be able to choose from a variety of career paths, such as Engineer, Tactical Officer, Doctor, Science Officer, etc. Your career path is your root, and will affect your skills, and how you command your crew. Consider Jean-Luc Picard, Beverly Crusher, Worf and Kathryn Janeway. Picard was an archeologist and diplomat, Crusher was a doctor, Worf a security/tactical officer, and Janeway was a scientist. Each eventually chose a career in command and became ship captains. This does not mean the game will limit your ship choices based on your profession – far from it. The examples are simply an example of how the game design was inspired.

what i underatnd, there NO Multi player crew on a single ship.
The video, skippy talked about you designing your crew and they grow with you.
You designed them as any other character, race, feature, skills etc etc.

You be able to gain more ships, and if i recall correctly, can assign your crew member to captain those ships andtake them with you.

The video gives allot more as he answer questions.

In the future, expansion will come where you can play a Romulan, ferengi or a cardassian, but i think it be an expansion for each race or two.

If you want to get some idea of how this game will play (eveyone a captain) check out potbs. There are a lot of game story years between that mmo and STO, but both of them are based upon the premise that 'every captain commands a ship'. I hope the STO devs avoid some of the pitfalls that have developed with potbs. Its a workable premise but it can become unbalanced in a number of ways if the devs are not careful.

I think you can board it to look around. See his ready room as it where, maybe even be transported around. But you are unable to control his ship.

Well if no merchants then would one still be ablr to be a Ferengi? Not that I'd be one, I'd be either Gorn or Klingon, just courioous.
