I would like to know, for the sake of continuity, if the core Star Trek novels are being used as cannon for the STO storyline; as well as the recent change-ups in character (In-game NPC) location. For example:
1) Data is dead, and B-4 is at the Daystrom Institute on Earth (TNG novel "Before Dishonor") with a full copy of Data's memories in his head.
2) Riker, Troi, and Tuvok are on U.S.S. Titan.
3) Admiral Janeway is dead. (TNG novel "Before Dishonor")
4) The Borg launch an assualt on Federation Space (TNG novel "Greater Than the Sum")
5) The Romulan Civil Cold-War.
6) The Shatner-esque ability to write Captain Kirk back into the current continuity-timeline.

Books are being treated as "soft" canon for the purposes of our story line. I can say that Jack has specifically said that he's reading all of the post-Nemesis novels to familiarize himself with what's been going on.

I saw somewhere that Cryptic is treating the books as "soft canon". In other words, they'll use the books but they won't be afraid to "break" the canon they present either.

I think they're looking at them, but they're setting it 30 years in the future so they can avoid them and write their own stuff. Like they never have to put in Riker because he'll be retired or dead.
Hopefully a lot of this will be covered/settled when Cryptic starts releasing the timeline updates.

True Dat, Phaser. :)
I can't wait to see what they come up with.

im interested aswell but yeah the novels are being treated as "soft-cannon" and as such would be subject to change or alteration if they were like that as we havent seen it on-screen

Heh, how do we know that the writer they hired isn't Shatner?

I will have an ulcer.
It's not that I don't like Kirk or Shatner, it's that when Kirk died, he should've stayed dead. It's overly cliché to revive him because of Shatner's ego.
If Kirk is somehow in STO, revived and such, I'll make a Klingon to repair the timeline, or something...

I'm with you brother.
I read the first Shatner book and thought "My god... this guy's ego is through the roof"

heh. I agree.
Now, if instead of inserting him in the current timeline, we were to run into him in his, suppose we hit another damned temporal anomaly, I'd be ok with that.

At last! People who agree.
And, yeah, if I end up going back to the TOS days and seeing Kirk, that's fine. If I see him striding around in present-day on some starbase.... I'll take a court martial.

Hehe.
"So, Captain Hayden, that's how you ended up in Penal Colony and Rehabilitation Complex 12?"

"Yep... was worth it, though."
(Btw, it's Captain Rokar. Bajoran name organization, and all that)
No. Never. I will be angry.
They won't need to.
By this time period there will prolly be thousands of grand children/great-grand children claiming linage to Kirk. Some from races we prolly won't even be allowed to play.

For Star Trek books are usually not considered part of canon. However, Cryptic did say they are using books for inspiration.

Everything is so jumbled up in the STworld, I dont know how you all keep it straight.
