it would be great of i could speak with my computer on board my ships...
something like: "Computer!?" or "Tea, Earl Gray, Hot" or command your Bridge Crew with Speech Commands or or or.... this would take you so deeply in to the Star Trek Universe. it should be a must have in this game

I do this all the time with my Macintosh Computer.
I can open and close programs with speech command and it can tell me jokes. thats very funny.
I hope that cryptic makes a funny feature with speech commands, that would be cool.
Only problem is that sometimes it could interfere with Voice over IP, Teamspeak etc. But we might have Hold-Key-Function while giving command or using TS.
I do support this idea (optional of course)

yes but may be we have no reason to use TS. because they could develop a good internal voice system

Kind of torn on this one I have yet to play a game or use voice command software that "always worked as intended" especially when I've been drinking. I can see myself saying "fire torpedoes 1-4" and my 1st officer gets up and walks out the door. or some other form of foolishnees. Just build in vocie chat for guild and group mates for me and I think I'll be alright.

Just imagine how I feel. I've got a redneck accent, so I can fully appreciate things not working as they should with voice commands. Just ask my former Guildmates on WoW about the multitude of miscommunications we've had because of my accent.
I can just see it on Star Trek Online. "Computer, transfer all auxiliary power to forward phaser banks!"

There might be too many errors with speach commands. But It would be great if you were in a fleet. You could communicate tactical decisions much faster.

If they have turbolifts, this will be a necessary feature.

it is necessary! without talking to the computer or something like that... it wouldn't be star trek

I guess you do make a point. Verbal interaction is pretty important when dealing with the ship's computer. This also brings up another question, Can you make it so that you have to speak with the computer to gain security clearence for things?

Right, You are correct.
But of course we have to keep in mind that voice recognition does not always work as intended, like one said, when you are drunk or have microphone problems.
Thus I would say it should be optional feature and maybe not for combat commands.
More for fun commands or commands to bring up menues onscreen or so.
If it works well, they maybe could expand it to combat commands as well :)

Oh totally. If they included a "Self-Destruct" or Warp Core Ejection feature, it would most assuredly require a voice code confirmation. I don't want my mouse to drift and I accidentally eject my core or blow the ship to Kingdom Come.
"Computer, commence Self-Destruct Sequence."
"Voice authorization required."
"Syler Psi-Epsilon-Zero. Set five minutes. No further audio warnings."
"Auto-destruct sequence confirmed. Five minute delay. This is the final audio warning. All hands abandon ship."
"Hey, Klingon Commander? I surrender!"

yea imagine: the mouse comes on the core eject button!
Computer: Core Ejection initiated! Falling to Sub-Light-Speed!
Captain: WHAT THE HECK!!! DAMN!!!
Enemy: Good Day to Die!

Think of how that would make you look in front of starfleet command. I think it might just lead to a demotion.

good point since we know there will be other places to explore while own ship what happens when i park my ship in somewhere, go hang out in engineering and some ******* sucker punches me. how do u issue the "Red alert! evasive manuever!" command from there.

Or what if you just need to speak to engineering, or sickbay, If you have other players aboard your ship.

Actually, voice recognition is a solid item these days. It has been developed to the point that even someone with an Oklahoma accent like mine can easily be understood. However, a simple voice training program will help with individuals and their various accents.
Oh and yes, I agree, without voice command, its not Star Trek.

yes... but i think that it will be to difficult to bring it up with other languages as english... my English is well enough for it... but thats not the point... star trek tv series has been released with so many languages, and they all know it in their own language and want to command it in their language... i think that will be a big problem

I agree with all you guys that it would be an amazing feature of the game, and surely it has to be intere somewhere!
II use speech recognition on my PC (in the UK) and it works just fine, it takes some time to programme it so that it understands your voice but once that's done it's fine. With regards to other countries adn different languages I know this is a feature that's used al over the world, so it shouldn't pose a problem - if the game is released in that language it should be possible to release a similar voice command feature in each.
I look forward to any official response to this thread!

I don't think it'd be too good of an idea. There were a few games in the past with voice commands, and it didn't work well at all. One thing that would be the problem are accents. Someone with a Boston or French accent could have some problems pronouncing something in your typical North American English, same going with Europe and elsewhere.
Or even someone with a stuffed nose. Saying something like, "Set course for the Stimple System." could sound like "Set cowse for da Stihple Systeh."

It would have to be optional, but I think a voice command feature would be essential for the Star Trek feeling of the game. I think a press on, press off feature would be necessary. Imagine what the game might do if you were to sneeze or something. Also I think some kind of system would have to be used to make the game used to the individuals voice.

This has definitely been discussed before, but I think it is a great idea and something like this would definitely add to the feeling of the universe. That being said, the developers would have to be careful when implementing speech commands because there are a number of problems that could arise, meaning the feature might get more cumbersome than beneficial if it isn't implemented correctly.

I think this would be an excellent addition to the game. There is a new rts coming out that is controllable via voice commands and think that this technology could be very well utilized in a game like this. Things like giving orders to npc crewmates like this would go a long way towards the immersion factor and is probably one of the best ideas I have seen come out of the community. Well done!
