Queries about Star Trek Online

Hi, i have created this thread as I am bit of a n00b when it comes to MMORPG's.

There are a few things I'd like to know.

Is there any estimate of a release date for Star Trek online?
Once joined up to Star Trek online can you access it at any time?
What rank do you start at and how do you attain higher ranks?
Can you order/be ordered by other players or solely NPC's?
What sort of missions can you do?
Can your player die?
Can you crew the USS Enterprise?
Is there a finite amount of ships?
Can the other players prevent you being promoted as they already hold that rank (chief engineer, ship captain).
Can you be demoted/fired?
Can you have communicate/have relationships with other crew members or NPC's?

It's a lot of questions but as I said I am a right n00b when it comes to this sort of thing!

Those are a lot of questions that have been discussed on the forums. I would suggest to do a Search from the toolbar up top, it would really help you get more information on each one of your questions.

Actually, some of these I can answer.

Is there any estimate of a release date for Star Trek online?
The official word is "less than 3 years"

Once joined up to Star Trek online can you access it at any time?
As long as you are online, and logged in.

What rank do you start at and how do you attain higher ranks?
Uncertain, probably not Ensign.

Can you order/be ordered by other players or solely NPC's?
As a game mechanic, you probably wouldn't take orders from other players, as a RolePlay mechanic, sure, why not?

What sort of missions can you do?
Exploration, Military, Science... we really don't know.

Can your player die?
The developers have said that harsh penalties for dying are a thing of the past, you'll probably respawn at a safe location in the event of character death.

Can you crew the USS Enterprise?
No. Players will start out in command of their own ship.

Is there a finite amount of ships?
Unknown, but doubtful.

Can the other players prevent you being promoted as they already hold that rank (chief engineer, ship captain).
No, since, as above, you are in command.

Can you be demoted/fired?
Unknown if you can be demoted, but definitely not fired..

Can you have communicate/have relationships with other crew members or NPC's?
Your Bridge Crew will be NPCs, you will definitely communicate with them, as to relationships, it's unknown. With other players, you will communicate or relate to them as in any other game. Join Fleets (STO name for Guilds) make friends, rivalries, etc.
