Well I guess they will use original music for the game and it most likely will incorporate Alexander Courage's original fanfare theme at times. But I hope they get permission to use some of the music from the TV and movie series. This may be a thread for music and score nerds, but I wanted to start a discussion on this issue.

Its still early in development and I have no idea what the music composition will be; however, whats wrong with talking about one of the best components of any entertainment medium: the music. When music is done right in a game it really helps immerse the player in the game without being a distraction.

My favorite scores are the ones by Jerry Goldsmith from TMP which became the theme for the TNG opening titles. Also he was rightfully brought back to do the score for First Contact and the rest of the TNG movies. I wish I could post a link to some samples.

Also lesser known but damn good was the flute theme from "Inner Light" by Jay Chattaway. And the other composers from the series like Dennis McCarthy and Ron Jones had great pieces in TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT. I am sure there are plenty more you all can think of. It would be great to hear these works of music in the game IMHO.

Personally I hope they get Horner to compose. Game companies have been getting better with regard to music.

A story to me isn't a good story without a soundtrack lol. Although I read I much prefer watching a play, movie, TV show, or playing a game because its a more visceral (correct usage?) experience when you have a song or melody to help draw you into the plight or events facing a character.

In an MMO I find it even more necessary than with other games. I want to 'feel' like I am in danger. I call your attention to the original 'Halloween'. Without the sound track the movie is, well, stupid and calling it 'less than scary' would be an understatement. Add in the sound track though and suddenly you're a little uneasy about walking into a dark room. At least I am lol.

Thoughts?

I agree just as long as that song isn't "Where my heart will take me". Nothing against the song or performer, but I was never fond of a pop song in a Star Trek shows opening title.

I agree... my first thought when I saw Ent for the first (and every subsequent) time was: "What the hell were they thinking?"

My favorites

Star Trek 4 - Voyage Home Opening and Credits

Star Trek 8 - First Contact Opening

Star Trek Klingon theme, that is mostly played when Klingons appear.

The best movie themes are imo:

1. First Contact
2 (tie): Star Trek 6 & Star Trek 4

Yeah, I'm glad to see alot of us agree on the First Contact score. It had Goldsmith's best contribution to Trek with the use of original theme, Klingon themes, battle themes with the Borg, and TNG theme.

aww if only Jerry Goldsmith was still with us... :(

First Contact and Generations are good themes imo to use as inspiration

Heh, yeah, I agree. /raise glass in memory of Goldsmith. That's why I suggested Horner. Or hey, Hans Zimmer's never done Star Trek, but I bet he could come up with some really good, hi-tempo music. Or Klaus Bedault, he's good too.

Goldsmith really set the sound for TNG. He was also a great composer on many other films and shows. I wonder if Joel Goldsmith wants to continue on his legacy?

Personally, I hope that a majority of the music in Star Trek Online is new and created just for the game, but I also think that certain musical themes similar to those found in the television shows and movies should be repeated.

in my oppinion they should use music scores from the newer films and like u say have some made for the game itself but using the same idea as the original tracks it would be quite nice to have the motion picture music on for an intro though

i hope to god it isnt repetitive though one suggestion for a battle theme would be "remus" on the nemesis soundtrack. ^_^

It's probably going to be mostly original. I think the Star Trek fan fare is a must, it's the most recognisable theme in all of Trek and has appeared in ever series and movie in some shape or form. However saying that, not every Star Trek game has used it unfortunately.

I also hope the game uses dynamic music, if I'm in the middle of a battle I want the music to subtly change depending on how well I'm doing (worked well in Bridge Commander). At the very least I want to music to at least change when I'm in a battle and not. I think it's important for an MMO to have a lot of music because players tend to spend more time playing one. If I hear the same battle music over and over it's going to become repetitive and boring, I'd like to hear different battle music and maybe even different themes for different races like in Legacy.

Anyway, that's my opinion.

I bet they could get Michael Giacchino to do the music. He is already doing the score for the new Trek movie. Also he has done the music for video games: Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, and others. This guy is really good with making soundtracks, if you have ever seen Lost, Alias, Mi3, The Incredibles, or Ratatouille then you know what I'm talking about.
