Do you think that Fleets is a good name for guilds ? All Federation ships are part of Star "Fleet", seems like a blanket generic term to me, would wing or squadron be better or something else along those lines battle group maybe, it's not that big a deal but was wondering..:)

Seems fine to me, the show did actually mention several different fleets. During DS9 there was mention of a 7th Fleet, there were a few others as well, but all were numbered.

I do also find that Fleet for guild is not the right term.

We should really differ from faction to faction:

For Klingons it could be "House"
There are many Houses and families in the Klingon empire, and there could also be the great NPC Houses for storyline.

For Romulans it could be Parties of the Senate or so.

For Star Fleet it should be Division of a Fleet maybe. But to be honest ... i don't like the idea of having Star Fleet divided into so many small fleets.

Anyway, if Cryptic has no better idea, i can live with it, because after a while you get used to these terms and for gameplay it does not matter in which fleet someone is, a "guild" is a bunch of friends for me - not a military structure :)

Fleet sounds fine to me and it's been mentioned in the series.

Something like squadron might be a good term for grouping though.

EDIT: a klingon house is a family, that'd be like having a fleet of Picards.

Star Fleet is an organizational name which is made up of multiple Fleets. A fleet is normally commanded by an Admiral, who is often also a commander in chief, but many fleets have been or are commanded by Vice Admirals or even Rear Admirals. Most fleets are divided into several squadrons, each under a subordinate admiral. Those squadrons in turn are often divided into divisions.

Fleet seems perfect for star fleet but as for other races the word fleet sounds to weak for them it should be a klingon word. Cryptic are always going to have this problem, they have read all the star trek books and watched all the tv shows and movies. Even so they are bound to make not so much a mistake but maybie something that the fans disagree with it is then of corse their job to make it right. This is trully a massive project!:)

I think it should be based upon the guild's size. For instance, five to six ships is a squadron, but part of an NPC controlled fleet. Then as they grow it can be a wing, etc and then once a guild has reached 15 ships it can be a fleet with NPC ships assigned to it and the guild leader can be promoted accordingly and build a starbase and blah blah.

I think that would bring a great sense of accomplishment to guilds. Perhaps guilds can even be sent on PvP missions and determine the success or failures of the conflicts between factions.

I'm perfectly fine with "Fleet".
While I'd be fine with a "Squad"(ron) as well, it describes a smaller organization.
A Fleet (guild) may consist of several Squads/Wings (divisions/groups/flanks), pending upon its size.

"House" or "Family" would be too much Battletech/Mechwarrior for my taste.

In the end, space follows naval terminology -- such be the convention.
Hence, "Fleet" settles in as quite a fit.

In addition, as mentioned previously, the series(es) make an extensive use of "fleet" to describe the different...well, fleets...employed throughout by the different powers.

I invisioned the guild system set up to be called Fleets

With the guild leader simply to have a Tag of CO of ABC Fleet or whatever independant of his starfleet rank that way a Lt Cmdr would be CO of ABC Fleet and he can pick an XO as well

Also he can set up Task Forces or Squads with several ships and each Task Force can have its own CO and XO

Ther term fleets for guilds seems logical to me. Wings and sqaudrons would be better suited for faster lighter attack craft and not big slower ships. Also Battle groups should be the equivalent of a RAID group.

Not sure if I like Fleet in particular.
Division (descendant from the business sense more than the military) or Wing sounds better, especially for the likely numerous smaller guilds.
'Fleets' I would envision you would be part of as you progress through the game and enter different regions.
Like the British old navy fleet had the Red, White and Blue fleet based on where they were stationed.

I'm not too concerned over the fleet/guild nomenclature - odds are good I'll end up referring to it as my SG or guild anyway, at least to myself, if I join a fleet/guild at all.

What would you call them then?

I guess you never watched Star Trek?

The group of federation ships in the dominion for instance was called the Second Fleet. So the term Fleet is correct.

This situation has been dealt with on both the old STO.NET forums that PE used as official forums as well as in a poll ran by PE on the official StarTrek.com forums. Fleets won so there realy is no reason for rehashing this debate.

That is a cracker-jack of an idea, Jake!

Personally, Fleet works well for me.

starfleet is the big military wing of the federation. within starfleet are smaller fleets "7th" "9" etc that are basically divisions of ships that work to defend the federation.
