Hi all,
I was wondering... WIth Fleets being clans, will there be any policy regarding names of fleets?
Or better yet.. would people like to play on a "Canon" server. Where the Fleet names are picked from a list made available by cryptic. The list would have acceptable canon names for fleets and such .
I just dread the idea of flying through space and seeing the Lollipop Fleet.
WIll there be fleet types? Science, Military, Exploration?

If there is an RP server I would expect that Fleet names would be checked against a list of cannon-esk names. Or regular servers though, I want to be a Klingon in "My friend is cloaked behind you".:D

Yeah, I will probably get on a "cannon" RP server for that reason. I prefer to keep it clean with restricted names like Seventh fleet, Deeps Space Four fleet, etc. I'll roll my eyes at names like 1337 F1337 and PWN Fleet.

lol why? Such a fleet would be small and n00b filled. I've seen more than a few guilds in WoW pop up with names like that, none of them have lasted more than a week or two, and their members are usually pretty bad at the game. I suspect they end up disbanding, at best they are limited to a handful of friends who like playing together and talking smack after winning a one sided fight. The majority of fleets will have more "Legitimate" names like those you suggested, and like those already being created in the Fleet Registration forum.

Well I think that is a great idea. In fact let StarFleet assign your fleet a name and number based upon what kind of fleet you want to be.

It could even be automatically generated based on a set of parameters such as:
(Planetary base) (sequential number)(Function)
So
Starbase 12 5th Exploration Fleet or something like that.

Well if we're going to be this picky, then ship names should be assigned not chosen. Not many captain get to choose what ship they command.

Though it looks like we will all be in on one server I believe that fleet names will be strictly regulated. Any way I believe there is no reason to be worried as star trek fans take star trek very seriously and though we make jokes of it on occasion we would never set out to "ruin" as it were the feel of the star trek universe.:)

Well, no, people should have the freedom to name their own fleets. But there just needs to be a content filter to deny names that are overly silly like LEET DUDEZ and HAX0RS. And I realize these fleets and players will be out there with crazy names anyways, its just not my thing.

I agree, but you cant stop it is my point. So unless Cryptic enables a program to choose for us, this is a deadend issue. Just my opinion.

SO I guess the question would then be:
Are we as a gaming community willing to give up our "freedom" and be assigned Ship names and fleet names?
I for one think that is given a short list of available names, I would be willing to go through with that.

I believe the names of both Fleets and Ships should be game generated. The more freedoms you give to the players, the further away from Star Trek it will become.
