This i belive has been mentioned before, but i couldnt find any such topic int he flood of topics... so i just wanted to show this to people to get some input and thoughts on this.

I was skimming threw the sweepstakes legal stuff and i came across this in the Prizes section

"4. PRIZES: Grand Prize (5): Five (5) Grand Prize Winners will be selected to receive: one (1) Star Trek Online retail box copy and one (1) Star Trek Online “Lifetime Subscription”. Estimated retail value of the Grand Prize is $550 per Grand Prize; $2750 total. The retail box prize will be awarded when commercially available, which is estimated to be at least one year after the close of the contest."

i think this has been mentioned before, but i wanted to show it for those saying it be 2+ years! why would u state this then in legal documents!? Now i see very well what "it's alot sooner then you think" means when he keeps saying that

Anything is possable but personaly I wouldn't get my hopes up. If I was a betting man I would put money on beta by February or March of 2010 and live that summer.

Gets them out of the "Well you said so and so" thing.

Man we'd all love that date, but we all know deep in the back of our minds it's probably not going to happen :(

By Thanksgiving 2009 we could all sit on the front steps at Cryptic and when they come to work we'll just keep chanting "Herbert, Herbert, Herbert"

I wouldn't expect to see it before the end of next year simply because of Champions. I know the dev teams are (mostly) seperate, but I imagine a lot of the bug testers and support people aren't so they will want to wait for Champions to launch and have the inevitable bugs dealt with before having to do it all again in STO. On the plus side, some of those Champions bugs will probably be in STO and thus be fixed before launch.

I don't think the development teams are as "seperate" as we think. I don't know how it fits the timeline, but I think there is something to your theory.

I dont think 2010, Cryptic has stated that they have been building the game to a playable phase. Thats how they made the trailer. In my opinion, I think one year from now sounds about right.

I think we could speculate all day, but my guess would be christmas 09 or first quarter 2010, hopefully the former.

Once again going to point out the two key phrases in that transcript being "at least" and "estimated".

Just found a snippet posted 10 August stating that "Cryptic is currently shooting for a 2009 release date."

Well, of course they're going to pad their date estimates. All game developers know (now, anyway) that when they try to squeeze a game through under a public deadline and fail, there will be a very loud thud when they hit the ground.

That happens just once and suddenly the whole company has a 'net reputation for being a sucky developer that can't hit their release dates. Blizzard, to date, is the only game maker to get away with this in the history of mankind. For some reason, we just look at it as part of their charm. :) All other companies are subject to the rigorous scratching of thousands of net geeks for every minute of time spent past their deadline without a released product.

No one gives a fixed release date until they have a Gold build ready to go. Until then it's all guesswork. They aim at a month in a given year, say it might land anywhere in that quarter, and let us speculate on the rest... because we're an unruly mob, us forum-goers. A dreadful group by and large. :)

They games time line starts in the year 2409. Why is that? Why not 2400, 2405, or 2410?

I think someone took a queue from Bungie and thought it would be cute to put the release date under our nose.

2409

Split 24 and you have two 12s. Leave the 09 at the end and you have...

12-12-09

December 12, 2009 ;) lol

The LoyalTrekkie is right folks. Please don't stumble down the "You lied to us path!" that a certain percentage of the playerbase (or in this case, potential playerbase) always seem to want to go down. Most MMO dev teams have gotten very good at being anywhere from a little to very ambiguous when it comes to dates. Unless you see something in print from the devs like their currently is for Warhammer ... a specific set date for release, take it with a grain of salt. The companies usually start whittling it down to a year, then a quarter and then either sometimes a month or at that point, a specific date.

But, just like meteorologists, no software project leader a year or more out from the target goal can predict what problems and potential delays will come up over the next 12+ months. And I would much rather have a dev team have some flexibility built into their release date then having it set hard and fast a year+ out. When you get dev teams pushing to hard to meet a release date instead of taking the time to do it right and fix the bugs they know about, you end up with a crappy release and a buggy game.

And as much as every one here would love to be playing this game by around this time next year, do you really want it to release like say Age of Conan ... sold ~700k copies and FunCom's last quarterly report says their subs around ~400k now. That's losing nearly 1/2 of your initial customers in three months time. That is not what we want to have happen.

Dont forget what that PR guy from Reverb said, "...Fall of '09" Hailing frequency posted a video on YouTube from the Vegas show just before the reveal of the STO Trailer in which a PR from Reverb said that he looks forward to the games release in fall of 09. I remember because I commented on the video and then quickly after that the video was taken down and/or made private, there was even a thread about the video on these forums ... so like Jack said, sooner than we all think.

If you look at the video on YouTube, now it bleeps out the part when he says "Fall of '09"
