In the interest of keeping your attention, you may skip the area where I'm outraged and go to the gameplay related part, look for the [/endrant]
I've been watching a lot of Voyager now that I have bought the DVDs and something has been bugging me since the first episode. Namely, the ship's 'features'
From "Caretaker":
"That's Voyager. Intrepid Class, sustainable cruise velocity of warp factor 9.975, 15 decks, crew complement of 141, bio-neural circuitry." -Betazoid Pilot Lady
Anything odd about that list? How about a similar description of a destroyer on current day earth (note: may have been decommissioned):
"That's the Foster. Spruance Class, sustainable cruise velocity of 32.5 knots, 6 decks, crew complement of 334, a big old pile of transistors and magnetic drives."
This isn't the last time that they mention gel packs in the series, oh no. Evidently they are slightly faster then isolinear circuits, but unfortunately they cannot be replicated. What's more, they tend to die a lot more often than isolinear circuits (at least more often than I see isolinear chips die on TNG from anything other than prolonged enemy fire). Nor is it the last time they count it as a 'feature', in almost every description of Voyager, we hear 'bio-neural circuitry.'
Why not say "100 ly range sensors", "Type-X Phaser Banks", or "Holographic EMH"?
[/endrant]
Perhaps things like bio-neural circuitry could be a form of ship customization in ST:O. Maybe Bio-neural gel packs give [+10 technobabble] and [-5 disease resistance].
Will we be able to include random upgrades like these in addition to core system updates (Type XV Phasers, Big Impulse Reactors, etc.) or will we be limited to a clear "optimal setup" for our starships?
