A few friends of mine and I were looking forward to this because we thought maybe it would give us a chance to be the crew of our own ship. But it looks as though the way this game works will not permit us to do this the way we wanted. You see, we essentially wanted to play out our own (I know its uber nerdy) Star Trek episodes where I would be the Captain of the ship, my friend Derek would be the second in command, my friend Jarasen would be the engine guy, and Zach would be the doctor.
Is there any particular reason why this could not be possible? If there is, is there any chance of it BECOMING a possibility in the near future? I mean any reason I can think of is essentially the fact that they wouldn't be playing all the time so perhaps the ship could not run all the time. But if the players wanted to form their own crew for ONE ship then maybe they could select the option to have their characters running in real time. That way even if they log out, as long as one player is in the game, the other characters will continue to do their jobs. And the system could be such that one player can't necessarily get the other player's characters killed when they are on "auto pilot" or if they do, there are no hindrances to that player's character. I dont know...
When I read the interview about the game, it was said that Cryptic wanted to really recreate the "feel" of star trek. Well I don't know about anyone else but the feel of Star Trek for me was always the beauty of a team of people doing their jobs to explore space in their vessel which each of them loved and took care of in their own way. I mean Scotty, loved the enterprise because he made damn sure the engines never failed. Kirk loved the enterprise because ...well he freakin captained the thing (though he was unsettlingly willing to blow it up on more than one occassion.) To me...THAT is the feel of Star Trek. Teamwork for the sake of taking care of a vessel and exploring new worlds with your crew, your friends.

The problem with that is....were playing with people (Real Humans with a brain).
By that, I mean not everyone is willing to work under someone. Sure it can work and sure its going to happen but not everyone will be on the same page.
To give a star trek feel, Cryptic will implement NPC's that will act as your crew.

it's a good possibility over a couple expansion/patches that this in one form or another would become possible.
I say a couple because i see them not implementing this entirely in one shot but over time. first allowing people onto ships, which they will... then expanding it to maybe carrying your friends around, then expand it more in some way and ect..
They said (not a direct quote but basicaly what was said) if There demand for the feature was high enough in the community they would certantly look into implementing as best they could the feature as future expansion(s).

I think the best option would be to have ships that can function well with only a single captain, but could function a bit better with a small crew.
I can see the appeal of multiple players on a ship. Having one man fly while another keeps an eye on the tactical sensors to see what's in the system would be interesting, for example. Or having one person available to scan opposing ships, modify weapons and shields to be more effective, and direct repair crews to fix damaged systems might be interesting. Having a player to lead boarding parties and security teams could lead to some interesting strategies as well.
In all these cases, though, a single player should have reasonable chances to perform the same actions as a multi-player crew. That way the ship can function even if only one crew member is signed on. It would just be assumed that control of the ship went to the highest ranking player. Additional players could fill suplimental roles to improve performance, but their presence is an advantage, not a necessity.

You have an interesting idea, but going on the information that has been released about the game so far, it won't work exactly like that. Still, I don't see any reason why you and your friends couldn't roleplay a similar situation as long as you don't mind using your imagination a little bit.

We should really move this discussion to the PC/NPC crew thread.

Please Razor or someone. Let's keep the rest of the forum a peaceful place for a majority of the community that posts here.

Oh! Thank you guys for your responses. I actually did move this to the PC/NPC thread not long after posting it here. I didnt even SEE that thread initially. I was a man with a mission. lol. But seriously... Yeah I can understand their reasons for not implementing it up front. I get it. It takes time. And when I was talking about it I didnt mean it would be a mandatory thing. I just meant...yknow...give us the OPTION.
But you're right. I dont mind using my imagination. As long as Cryptic does in fact eventually get around to truly implementing the ability to choose to join someone's crew. Because thats the key right there...choice. If everyone WANTS to be the captain of their own ship and me and my three friends are the only player based bridge crew out there then so be it. But that's not much of an argument for my case. Haha

Fear not, Uber Nerd, I've been totally thinking about doing the same thing! :D If done right, it could even be it's own web series, help fill the void left by Voyager and Enterprise...maybe we could call it "Star Trek Online: The Series" (STO:TS) - how cool would that be?

SO COOL! lol
Yeah. I was going to be Captain Daniel W. Corvinus of the USS Raven. Commander Derek would be at my side along with Lt. Jarasen and Dr. Z. Oh man it was going to be crazy fun. Every day we logged on we were just going to role play another episode in our own journey. Go to to planets...do that thing they do in Star Trek where they get involved with the planet's affairs but somehow don't "violate the prime directive."
Now I am wondering if the Prime Directive is even an element in the game at all. Without it, what fun would that be? All I know is...if Player based crews aren't happening but the Prime Directive is... I am going to fly around with my mindless crew and violate the hell out of the prime directive until finally the implement player based crews. lol

What if I want to be captain one night? What if you guys are at work? Can I take the ship for a spin in borg space?

That's a good question. And I see where you are going with that. I wont lie. I don't have a good response to that. I guess the lesson to be learned there would be to not recruit jerks into your crew. lol. But seriously... I think the captain of the ship can set a series of limitations which the crew can agree on together (much like a guild if you will.) But then...that would limit the fun for other people. I dunno. What do you think? There must be a successful way to pull it off. Someone else have any ideas? Im curious to know.

There isn't a sucessful way to pull it off.. I want to be able to login at 4am and play. I don't want to have to wait for you and your friends to get home from school.

Well again. That's why I offered up the idea of it being an OPTION. Besides, I do believe there will be the ability to have multiple characters as there are in most MMOs so it isn't as if you would be COMITTED to that one character on that one ship. It would be an element for RPers. They could designate times to play together etc... But I do not believe you when you say there is no successful way. There is a successful way to do most anything. Not more then ten years ago I was told it would be impossible for games to implement destructible terrain.
Try not to be so negative. I don't understand what your vendetta is against me or this idea. I'm a person, and this is just an idea. I am not forcing it upon anyone, I am asking people for their opinions on how to make it work. If it could be implemented I wouldnt want it to be mandatory anymore than you would. I just want to know I have the option, that's all.

My vendetta against you is that you are creating fake accounts and trying to make it appear that everyone is for afk player crews. And they aren't.

I am not trying to make it seem that everyone is for anything. Everyone has an opinion here. I am ASKING for other people's opinions. But what I am saying is that you don't have to share my opinion to find a way for the option to be there. It wouldn't hurt you in any way to know that if you wanted to you could be a medic for someone else's ship.
I don't even know what you are talking about. This is the first forum I have joined since I used to play City of Heroes. But if you are going to continue to point me out as a...hacker? I don't even know what I am being accused of being but.. you sound like your on a witch hunt, so I will just leave it to you. Good luck with blacklisting.
Does anyone else have an opinion?

This thread needs to be locked. Your first post was in the correct thread tonight and then you created this one with the same template you used in the correct PC thread. You are the same individual who is creating fake accounts to try and convince us that afk player crews are a good idea. Please please lock this thread

Did you even read the post I made in the PC thread. I even said in that thread that I posted this thread here first because I skimmed over the PC thread and didnt even realize there was one. Look... You can have this thread...or lock it...or whatever... it seems that you drew me into a senseless argument and now the spirit of fun in this thread is lost. So I don't care. Whatever.. I'm creating false accounts and "trying to convince the world that afk..." Whatever you think I am up to...yup. That's what I am doing. Also...I rigged the 2000 presidential election. Yep that was me. Also...I sunk the Titanic. And uh.....oh yeah.. I am the cause of the Fall of Rome.
Get over yourself. Take your pills. I am through acknowledging you.

I think the best option would be to have ships that can function well with only a single captain, but could function a bit better with a small crew.
That is one of the reasons why PC are getting angry response from some people. Giving an advantage to PC, no matter how small will give an advantage to that crew in combat. Thus people who want to go solo will feel "forced" to group.
I am all for PC but I don't see how it can be used either way without an advantage or disadvantage. No one wants to fall behind in their character development and having PC get small advantages will encourage grouping. That's why the comments of the anti-PC crowd are really fierce.
Anyways, this needs to be in the PC/NPC thread discussion.
