So, we assume that this game will have some form of "money". It may not be gold or even credits. It is looking like it will some form of reputation system, XP, or whatever. Regardless, we will be able to gain "something" to spend with.

So I'm wondering "what" exactly will we be able to buy? Ships is an obvious one, but will we be able to upgrade them? I don't really see how upgrading your ship's weapons, engines etc would really be any different from just "buying" a new ship.

I mean, how many times in Star Trek did they upgrade their systems? It was very rare. The ship itself was the upgrade.

Besides that, what about hand to hand weapons and armor? It wouldn't make sense for a star fleet player to beef up his crew with heavy armor and heavy weaponry. The federation usually never wore armor or had any weapons larger than simple hand phasers. Bigger guns were only needed when starfleet organized massive attacks against the Borg or some other global threat, and even then the weapons were not "bought", they were issued.

I could see players buying more furninture or customization, but beyond that and new ships, what else can we really buy?

Are you kidding? Scotty, Geordy, B'Elanna... they were *always* upgrading something. It's very rare when an entire new ship was given. I can only think of two specific instances...

TOS - When The Enterprise NCC-1701 (Constitution Class) was destroyed and they were assigned to The Enterprise NCC-1701A (Constitution Class)

TNG - When the Enterprise NCC-1701D (Galaxy Class) was destroyed and they were assigned the Enterprise NCC-1701E (Sovereign Class)

Edit:
I should add that neither of these instances occurred during the individual series, but in specific movies, Star Trek IV the Voyage Home and Star Trek: First Contact, respectively. (these movies are where we first see them, anyway.)

For the economy there are all sorts of things that we could "aquire". Resources, alien technology, Dilithium, spare parts for a damaged ship, scientific data on a planet, (it think Voyager used replicator or holodeck rations a few times)

As for uniforms or armor maybe there's a new alien species with disrupter technology that requires officers to don armor for away missions. Maybe there's more chance of hand to hand combat with other species (Klingon, Jem hadar). Maybe we just want to aquire new dress Uni's :D

I think it could be called differently for all races

Prestige for Federation
Honor fot Klingons
Latinum for the Ferengi
Influence for Romulans

Ideally, I see ships levelling up like a traditional RPG character would level up. You're a level one in Phasors, level up your Phasors! You're a level three in resource collection, level that **** up!

And it'd reset every time you get a new ship. So there's a big benefit in staying in one ship for a long time if you're a very specific player type (resource collecting, PVP), but if you spread yourself around you might want a bigger ship that's better at everything generally when you first buy it.

All ships are stocked with various types of hand held phasers and phaser assault rifles. It's captain's decision whether they're used or not. The rifles were very rarely used in TNG except in the movies. It's done a little often in DS9, and quite often in Voyager. We may expect to see different types of Federation weapons too. A few of the newer weapons in the two Elite Force games were of Federation design.

Also, I don't know if we'll be getting armour for our characters, but I do know we get personal shields. Maybe they can be upgraded, perhaps with better regen or resistances to different types of attacks. Like maybe you are planning to visit a lava planet so want your personal shield to be quite resistant to heat and fire.

I imagine customizing the appearance of your ship will also cost you, and as has been said, upgrading your ship too. Then there are basic resources that ships run on (fuel for the engines, chemicals and stuff for the sickbay, emergency rations, phasers of different types, so on). Not to mention fleet owned starbases and other facilities. They might have some loot that is required when trying to research technology you picked up on an away mission.

You'll be using 'Prestige' or whatever to get new senior staff too. Like if one dies (I imagine they could die?) or you find yourself wanting a new one.

See? There are a lot of things you can 'buy'

Edit: Oooo, restocking on photon/quantum/whatever torpedoes is another thing.

Captain's Log, Stardate 46391.10:

Riker is running the ships resources dry with the replicators. He has an insatiable appetite, so I have removed him from my senior staff and he is confined to quarters.

I have chosen Tom Paris to replace him. Surely HE will not eat all the food! (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=7lMz_-CB75M&feature=channel_page)

XD

I was thinking more like:

OOC: I'm getting bored with this security officer. I want a new one!

IC: Captain's Log, Stardate 53671.2: I have promoted Lieutenant Redshirt to Lieutenant Commander and have granted his request for a transfer to the USS Pera. I am confident he will make an excellent XO.
