I was playine LOTRO the other night and our fellowship hit a fellowship roll which made me come up with an idea for star trek online, Critical hit Combos. Since this game will be taken place where you command a ship and the primary officers on board i thought about a random occuring event for each officer that would take place at certain times.

This next section will explain how a critical hit combo would work in the head of battle for each officer:

Medic: As a battle rages on and the ship is thrown about, officers will lose HP and it is the job of the medic to keep the officer's HP up but the medic isnt a miracle worker and can only keep the HP up for so long. All the sudden a CHC (critical hit combo) Shows up. The captain (YOU) must enter in a series of numbers, letters, or directional arrows in a very short amount of time in order to complete the combo. When the combo is complete, the system randomly chooses a reward, this could be a free ressurection, group heal, single heal to the lowest HP, and so on.

Tactical officer: In most games critical hits against the enemy occur randomly, in this case you would have to work for those critical hits by using the critical hit combo. When the combo is complete, a critical hit is made against the enemy.

Science officer: In this case your science officer uses his infinite knowlege of the universe to manipulate the enemy in a critical hit combo roll. This could be a power drain, slow, increased miss chance, and so on.

Engineer: When the battle gets to the point where both ships are badly damaged, the engineer is KEY. In this case lets say your sheilds are at a low point and you get the luck of having an engineer CHC roll. You complete the combo and you get lucky with a sheild boost.

I think CHC would help with the usual mmo button mashing and add a bit of fun to the equation. Also the effecivness of CHC's would be parallel to the officer's level so the higher the level, the more powerful the reward. I thought i would throw this idea out since the game is still under major construction.

********.

Quick time events of any sort are bad and wrong.

Wont work unless they pull off a system that complelty takes into account server and player lag.

I have to agree. In ship combat, we'll be fighting tactically, taking time to gain good position, scanning for weaknesses, using planning and strategy to gain the upper hand, like in Wrath of Khan.

I don't like the idea that I hit buttons in some sort of combination for a "special".

Now that doesn't mean that a well placed phaser blast or torpedo couldn't cause catastrophic damage to a ship, I think that it would be a necessity from time to time. There were many instances where quick thinking saved the ship and crew from certain death, and I think that should definitely be incorporated, but it should be more on the part of the vessel taking the damage, not by the attacker.
