Will it be possible in STO to have players acting against the opposition in ways other than purely militarily?

What are the possibilities of performing infiltration, espionage, sabotage, assassinations, terrorism attacks, economic attacks, political attacks, cultural attacks and other under handed activities in order to weaken the position of enemies of their empire?

Would it be possible to have sub-factions who would specialise in this form of warfare? Such as Section 31, the Tal Shiar and the Obsidian Order, each of whom would use smaller, faster and stealthier vessels rather than large warships in order to carry out their activities. Missions would be more about away missions, infiltration enemy installations to carry out objectives than about space combat but sometimes these quiet missions are far more effective and you can achieve with one small ship something almost impossible with a fleet of dreadnoughts.

Whenever such players would be forced into battle their ships should be equipped with hardware designed to disrupt the enemy and allow them to escape quickly rather than heavy weapons used to destroy their target. And in the worst case scenario they'd have to use their self destruct to remove any evidence of their activities.

The Gorn Confederacy black ops likes to recruit those of our kind with chameleon abilities.

They are surprisingly effective.

I agree 16 of 69. I think espionage, assasination, economic attacks and the like should play an important role in STO. It could give a mission that everyone thinks is cut and dry a new twist. Players who are simply on a mission to supply a colony with supplies could run into a massive plot to destroy an entire planet so that their enemy could obtain the planet. Something along those lines. The options are endless and the layers to the storyline could just get more complicated involving mutliple factions ect..

There has to be some level of black ops, even if it is just counter mission runners and intelligence gatherers.

It would be interesting to take some Klingon ship and see how far you can get into another territory to report back ship count, and or armaments at the least.

I want to be an interrogator. Getting that "confession" would be oh so rewarding. Spoonheads of the Obsidian Order beware!

Im sure we'll see a wide variety of diverse missions, most of which will probably involve diplomacy, combat or exploration, or a combination of the above. Certainly other missions would involve these black ops though.

Though this probably wont be included into the game at the launch players will probably find an unofficial way to do this.

I imagine there might be some away missions featuring stealth, sabotage, assassination, and any other number of black ops. Of course, I prefer to nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. ;)

I'd love to be lead a Federation Black Ops team. Sneaking my ship past enemy patrols, beaming into a secure base with my Science Officer disabling their security systems... Extra rewards for getting out of the system without detection etc.

I know it wouldn't be everyone's cup of Earl Grey, even mine all the time, but it would certainly be cool to have that in there.

To qualify for missions you need to pass a series of counter torture trainings including counting the number of lights in front of you :D

This is a great idea! I don't think that something like this will be present when the game launches, but this is definitely an interesting concept for future expansions and updates to the game.

We actually incorporated black ops into our fleet structure. See link below.

I hope to some degree that it's there.. maybe take some missions for Starfleet Intelligence and eventually after doing enough (or doing well enough).. getting recruited for some missions by Section 31.. or even being able to specialize in black ops, marine tactics, stealth, etc.. I'm hoping they have all that.. I'd love to have a team of Marines with some black ops and whatnot on my ship.. I wouldn't mind being one actually.

Me too. That would be really interesting.
