View Full Version : Idea: Holodeck Historical Battles

Using the holodeck system, players would be able to take the Captain's chair of famous ships from the Star Trek franchise and relive famous battles such as the nebula battle from "The Wrath of Khan." A system could be implemented that would create an instance for the sim to take place in, perhaps allowing for a player or player and AI crew to run the bridge of the ship. Further still, imagine being able to take the role of the protagonist, or see how you might have done something differently? The possibilities are endless. Given the great stories to choose from, and the excitement it could bring, this should definitely be a consideration.

This could also work for a tutorial area, maybe even the idea being you're playing as your character while at Starfleet Academy (or other factions' equivalent institutions). As for the historical scenarios you mentioned, maybe for successful completion of the mission you could receive a lore related reward. In the example of the Wrath of Kahn nebula battle, you could be awarded a model of the U.S.S. Reliant for display in your ship's ready room.

Just remember to Kirk your way through the Kobayashi Maru. :D

This could also serve as a wonderful way for members of the same faction to face off with each other. Its a really good idea, tho, to be able to do historical mishions. I would want to fight in the battle of Cardasia.

It would be great to have full use of the Holodeck. That would open the door for endless d/l content and modding... lord, exciting.

Definitely sounds like a great idea to me :)

I liked the way they did it in Elite Force when historical re-enactments were used to train you in the use of new weapons. Would we also be able to have away mission scenarios as well as space battles?

I so would like to do the Kobayashi Maru test.

I would hope so, it would be so awesome for characters to reinact the fight between Kirk and Spok in the episode when Spock goes into Pon'Far (da da da da dada da dada da da da da dada da dada)

Heh that would be great, but I want the option to try to reprogram the test ;)

For that matter I'd like to try the encounter with Darmok at El-Adrel IV.

Hmm... since races can be created in character customization, it could be possible to play as his species. (Blanking on their name.)

Hmm... since races can be created in character customization, it could be possible to play as his species. Why would I need to? We are in a holodeck (or holosuite) after all. :)

That Darmok episode is one of my all time favorite TNG episodes, yet I never would have ever thought to "play the event on a holodeck," very interesting.

I love the idea of using the Holodeck for some "friendly pvp" between fleet mates and specifically for some TOS era ship action. And really, I think it would be fun to pick all sorts of costumes for your character when going into a holodeck program. You just know they're gonna have a Sherlock Holmes program....

I'd like to see that level of user creation with the Holosuites... but I doubt they'll give it to us. Second Life had that level of customization and it ended up pretty much just for kinky sex and gambling. Which, you know, is okay in itself... but I don't see that happening in Star Trek Online. ;)

yeah i think quark riggs his Dabo table, but i digress.

The kobyashi maru would be a wonderful toutorial, especially since it really would cover all the MAJOR game mechanics like directional control, sensors, warp, combat, and of coarse the reason there is a kobyashi maru, death.

This is a great idea but I think it may be a little bit too involved to be implemented in the game by launch. That being said, I would really like to see a feature like this implemented in the game somewhere down the line, because the possibilities are almost endless!

So many things that could be done with the holodeck from a game play standpoint. Friendly PvP/Sparring in historic simulations etc. is chief among them. I hope they don't disappoint us on the Holodeck.

This would be a really fun idea. I hope they can do this for at least a few of the great battles. The holodeck present the opportunity to do so many fun things, but I expect the options with it to be pretty limited due to the obvious time constraints.

dang someone already mentioned the Kobayashi Maru senario. And i dont think this would be all to hard to impliment. All the needed game mechanics must exist for the rest of the game. So it could essentialy just be like an instance where you are given certain things per the holodeck program's writing. Those things could range from the ship from the Kobayashi Maru to the curiously random appearances of the ingredients Kirk used to make gunpowder when he fought the Gorn.
