View Full Version : cooperative play?

I am not 100% but I believe that under the "first" round of development on this title there was going to be some kind of cooperative play where we could serve aboard larger ships in support roles in order to gain experience and rank.

I really liked that idea. I am not always going to want to captain my own ship. I want to maybe be the young ensign engineer who's fixing the phasers at a critical moment during a battle and who spends his off time in the holodeck with the cute Vulcan chick who doesn't get my humor.

If we have have to have ships of our own, mine should start out as something like a run-about which would be simply docked at the larger ship during my "tour of duty".

Perhaps this has been addressed in another thread if so, perhaps someone can point me to it. I don't have time to search through all the threads.

I did watch the video of the Las Vegas event and no one asked about this, but it was made clear that everyone would be a captain of a ship. I was really hoping that you would have to attain at least Lt. Commander rank before you could be a captain. I was looking forward to being an ensign out of the acadamy who has to work his way up, do swing shift duties, take the command test, become a first officer and all that before becomming a captain of a ship ( at any rank ).

Thanks,
Dodger

I think you're still thinking of Perpetual's STO.. they were going to have Cooperative play aboard the ships.. but Cryptic isn't doing that.. they're going for a "You captain your own ship" kind of thing..

That's not entirely accurate. You *can* have coop gameplay aboard your ship. Suppose you have your friends aboard (which Jack mentioned) and you are boarded. Whether as part of a mission or a random event, you will all work together to destroy the Borg/Klingon/Breen/Whatever boarding party.

You just won't have your friends take over stations from your AI bridge crew.

Yes. The only thing you can't do is help run your friend's ship. That is the ONLY cooperative play not available.

We really need more discussions about this.

Well it's good that there are so many posts on this topic because that's how the community let's development know how important an issue is.

I have been waiting already a very long time for this game and the cheif reason (other then "it's Start Trek) for wanting to play was the cooperative play. If that is gone, I am very dissapointed and my excitement about this title is now quite reduced.

I think that it's important to let Cryptic know these things early on while there is still time to maybe make some changes.

Yes, we must continue to beat this horse. It must be beaten thoroughly and with vigor.

Please note:
PE planned to do it and they never even finished an engine.

Cryptic wants to do it, but haven't figured out how to make it fun so they're holding off until after the game is released to look into it further.

Jack mentioned that each "captian" would also have a primary skill like diplomacy or science, etc. I really don't see why we can't then serve on another ship in that capacity. It seems they laid the groundwork, then decided..NO, we are cutting it off at this point.

Your bridge AI crew should be there only when live players are not avaiable.

A player should be able to better perform in any capacity then an AI bot. That's not to say the AI bot should be worthless. For solo play and for missing personel, etc. the AI bot needs to be solid. But you should always want a real person.

Perpetual was my best friend, they promised me everything I could ever want. Oh course they never delivered any of that, but still I loves them so....

We've all been waiting a long time for this game, had it been in the hands of Cryptic first we probably would have had it by now.

Yes, they have the foundation for Away Missions, but not so much for using consoles. That is the ONLY THING THEY DO NOT HAVE!
An AI bot doesn't care that he'll be pretending to press buttons for half an hour. A player does. An AI bot doesn't care that to scan takes one button press. Maybe 2. A player does. An AI bot doesn't need an interface when at a station. A player does.
