Starfleet marines

Meny of us that have played star trek rpgs have ben in groups that use starfleet marines. as far as star trek cannon goes they are not cannon they have not been seen doing anything in st tv shows roddenberry once said when asked they might exist but have never been so so there for not cannon. if they is massive ground combat or bording of emeny ships sf marines would do better for this job then a bunch of red shirt sec officer. iv been into st over 20 years an would love to see them in sto. who else would want to see the class or professtion in sto. anyone else have any thoughts

I would like to see Start Fleet Maries, but doubt they will make it in game because they never appear in any of the movies or TV series.

Well in DS9 they had a several of episodes with large ground battles which included large number of starfleet infantry. How STO impliments it will be up to them

I'd love to see them myself. Do they appear in any of the books? As Jack mentioned they will also be looking at soft cannon as well.

That's because the Federation never really had to invade and occupy worlds; thats not what they're about.

However, the Dominion War has changed that perception completely. I think that Starfleet and the Federation are going to have to speed train and create a real and large Marine corp soon. It's unavoidable.

BTW, marines are not really uncanonesque. They just haven't really been needed until now, maybe they've been chillin till now? Who knows, but government entities always have ground troops, its a fact of life.

Enterprise had the MACO's, which were pretty similar.

They had Marines on board when they were going to the Xindi.

Well if we follow the idea that the U.S. Navy is the concept Star Fleet was built upon, Marines would not be on ships as an invasion force, but for security purposes. They are called Fleet Marines in military.
