I have this theory about someone who was posting in the Insta Travel thread. I'm not giving any names, but he was only there for a few pages, and I honestly think he was fishing for good arguements against realistic travel by posing as being against portals.

But I could be considered one of those conspiracy theorists, and shouldn't be taken too seriously. :D

When I worked on a Dev team (for a sadly failed project... sigh) we all had unknown alt names.

Agreed that would be cool. Secret agent dev names would be cool but they still couldn't give us anything good.

their answer is this "They dont know and they dont know what he did" and that is what made him great.

I've never worked directly on a dev team, but as a fan site guy who worked closely with a few dev teams I can say that the devs had both "special names" and alt names on our site.

Failed project? Hmmmm was it with MS? Sorry I'm inquisitive.

I think LordDave is one of them haha. Just kidding. Of course having a chance to mingle with us common folk and get our opinions by actually participating in the dialog is a great idea.

Its also a great way to try and explain why they're doing some of the things they are doing in the game. Nothing wins people over quite as easily as sitting down and explaining your position and offering evidence or context to back it up.

In all seriousness though, I'm sure they are, if only to be able to ask questions about ideas or opinions or to start debates. It gives them the ability to generate ideas while not looking unprofessional.

To think, that a mod is living among us is a strike of logic. If anything, they probably work better watching us like this and interacting. Then again, we all could be mods and don't know it. I easily think three or four of the posters on here are in fact Mods. Just gonna keep it to myself.

That is the problem with devs, they are like werewolves,

They look just like you and me. They mingle amongst us, they shop in our stores, go to our schools, walk on our streets, but by the light of the full moon, they become feral....

Okay, maybe there not like werewolves at all.

Gonna have to work on my analogies.

Well, we hope so anyways.

Because you know, at any company there is always at least one guy who is completely clueless as to what is going on. At least one.

Probably somebody at Cryptic who thinks they make sausages. Can't figure out why everybody always wastes time messing with computers. Just sits at the loading dock, waiting for the meat shipments to arrive. Holding his seasoning, and waiting.

You know, seirously, I should never be allowed to run a company. Because if I did, I would hire one guy whose sole job it is to hang out on the forums posting the most random nonsense.

Like, just completely wrong information about what we are working on, horribly wrong.

Then I would get all of my community guys to routinely tell forumgoers not to listen to that one guy, because he doesn't know what he is talking about.

But only sparringly, while the guy whose job it is to post wrong information will be on everyday posting several times a day, with the most bizarre nonse imaginable.

I don't know why I would find this funny, but I would.

Just a FYI. I have a friend who works in Public relations for a company that deals with the Montreal Canadiens, IRL, and Nascar. She also helps me with PR for my NWN project im involved in. I was told that many times a PR firm will hire or have folks on forums hidden under random names either boosting the product or person up and stirring up debate for research purposes. This makes a lot of sense and I can see the benefits. So, I dont doubt that Cryptic could possibly do it. Im sure its been done before in other MMOs. You see a lot of times over at WoW the "Palehoofs" bringing up a lot of topics to stir debate or sometimes in his case he will ass kiss/defend Blizzards decisions.

So, I dont doubt it one bit. Its a smart ploy.

Actually, that was a big development hurdle, because the controller actually is a phaser, which was fine in single player, but lead to some unfortunate incidents in multiplayer.

i hope the devs are here, in guild wars there was a lady by GW name of Gaile Grey she was spokesman for anet, she was a gamer u might run into ingame and talk to and she would talk to you and she posted on the guru forums till the devs made a fool of her once too often by not doing what they told her to tell the people they were doing and she lost all credbility. the new person who took her place does not post on guru and i don't think even plays the game but she is community relations for the game.

so please devs pay attention to the boards and speak to us.

I figure it is happening. There’s no real reason not to, it’s not like they don’t have opinions they want to get off their chest like everyone else but know it would be inappropriate for a developer to post.

BreachAndClear
08-13-2008, 07:44 PM
It would be the best way for them to communicate, because when they're overtly a developer, they tend to get flooded with questions.

I recall that Will Wright (creator of the Sims and Spore) briefly made an appearance on a Spore message board at gamingsteve.com, but once people found out it was him, he immediately left as he got flooded by people that wanted him to answer their questions.

The upside to a developer being covert is that they can communicate with you, but the downside is that they have to pretend to be just another casual gamer, and thus can't openly answer questions regarding the game.

I'm kinda hoping that the devs look at these forums for story ideas, because as fans, we're an almost unlimited resource for them to bounce ideas off of, and maybe grab ideas from. Hell, half the reason I post my story ideas is the hope that a dev might think its cool enough to ask if I have any more (internship?).

I'm totally willing to guess that all the members of the game have an alternate character or "forum avatar." I don't have a problem with that either. I just hope that they can stay unbiased and fair in that they don't get any special advantage somehow. I say this because a couple bad developers in Eve Online gave game items to their in-game characters... They mixed their personal play with their professional calling.
