In the webcast, I heard that you can discover new resources and build mining platforms or various starbases.
What if I wanted to be a trader, or a pirate or sorts? Find my own recourses build and sell ships and prehaps create my own existence as a place for people to come to when the need say black market/trade goods or information and so on. The Maquee, the Orion syndicate or even one of the major factions secret organizations
like the Tal'shear or the Obsidian order, section 31 and so on.

Also, they touched on it briefly in the webcast, but what about GM events. It would be really cool if even players could be recruited to control GM events, such as the borg moving into a sector or another story line controlled by players or GM's. This would help avoid the staleness most mmos get plagued and frankly, most MMO's don't do. It is a great selling point for the game and untapped recourse over looked by other games.
Thanks

that would be very good, cause even tribl wars is getting a little boaring now.

I think that at least initially, players will need to choose between joining the United Federation of Planets or the Klingon Empire. That being said, I don't see what is to stop someone from being a trader or pirate, and I think that the idea of neutral factions might be something Cryptic Studios will explore in future expansions.

Agree with trekkie... they have already stated that in the future there are plans to add more playable factions.

I think thats fine. But what do you think about the Gm driven events in the STO realm. Most people know that Star Trek TNG accepted storylines from people that submitted ideas for episodes. Whats to stop them from recruiting a few players, or selecting through a process, and giving them a set of instructions on how the event is to go down. I for one, would love it. Just to be able to help in an event from the other side would be so fun and again this is an area of gameplay, to my knowledge, not used by any other mmo. Tell me it would be cool to have a gm come to you and say, I need you to captain a borg cube and go attack this starbase. I think people that play STO would be thankful for the opportunity and would gladly accept the idea.

You could set up a piratebase in free PvP space. I know I will when I have the fleet for it.

Playing neutral factions that are attackable by both factions might be intresting if enough incentive to play is offered.

I guess if you choose star fleet or Klingon you could just go by your fleet name, unless you get some kind of faction penalty for attacking other players of your same faction.

I really doubt you could attack those of your own faction. In Starfleet, I believe that's a court marshall offence. Also, the fact that PvP regions are waaay out there would make it less likely that you can prey on player ships.

Having players flying Borg cubes and so on would mean a design/interface modification and so on, wouldn't you say? I'd think that it'd be easier for them just to use an AI for that....

Most AI's are fairly predictable, regardless of how new they are. Again, I'm simply saying player driven events sponsored by GM's is a facet of MMO's I have not seen in the mmo's I've played.

I think the idea is good in theory. It'd be good if it was executed well.

As far as a Neutral Faction. YES. I really want one. Don't get me wrong, I think the federation is neato and all. And I like the Klingon Empire well enough... but seriously... Part of the appeal of Star Trek is the nautical metaphor of freedom and adventure. I think some of it is lost if I'm gonna have to be receiving orders from the Admiralty all the time to go do this and go do that. Go Investigate this comet near the neutral zone, etc.

I'd like to control my own destiny... and maybe a little pirating if it was possible. You know... because, space pirate is a no brainer.

Well, we alrady know romulans and dominion are coming in future installments. No reason we cant see a neutral pirate or something in the same expansion pack.

For now, even though you have to choose a faction doesnt mean you necessarily have to do certain things. You could build a mining station and spend ur time mining if you want to, or finding other things to trade with poeople. Really anything you can think of you can probably do in one form or another.

I still think they should implemeant a race that is inbetween and can do those things without joining anyone faction.
