How will space combat and planet combat be? will it be first person like you can view the control ships in your bridge and be able to fight in first person on planets, or will it be mix or where you pick it? :D

It should be both depending on the situation.
It will be 3rd person view. Unknown if you'll have the option to change to 1st person view, but probably

Yes I am with you an third person you should be allowed to move the camera to see what is all around you

I think the trailer gives you an idea… looks 3rd person to me.

3rd person, but I'm hoping we have a 1st person option.

It will be 3rd person, well behind the ship for good tactical control, they have said it so implicitly I think we can just about count out any chance of 1st person....
I cannot recall getting the answer regarding non-ship combat.... anyone?
This would be a good one for the FAQ if it's still unknown.

kinda resembles tabula rasa a bit much with the 3rd person view.
Im hoping for a first person view :)
I would love to see a ship to ship combat system that involved a mix of exterior 3rd person gameplay and interior bridge management. I would love to see long battles between ships that involve lots of switching in and out between the bridge and exterior views. Anyone who's played Bridge Commander should have an idea of what I'm talking about. While "dog fighting" you would have to periodically switch to the bridge in order to issue commands to your crew members, that sounds a lot like what they're going for.
Heck, why not just make both ways viable? Both different play styles might each have their own specific advantages and disadvantages so that players can choose to play as a Captain on the bridge issuing commands to his crew, or maneuvering the ship from an exterior view in a more hands on way or a hybrid of the two.

space combat will be 3rd person but can adjust the cam to your needs, and in ground or inside a ship it would be entirely optional, but I nearly always like the default cam cause I just get used to it.

I recall playing at least a few Trek games that offered an immersive bridge interface.
Spectrum Holobyte's 'A Final Unity'. 'Bridge Commander', of course.
The problem I recall in both those cases being that it was always easier, expedient and effective to forego the bridge and just take 3rd person command of the ship.
I'm not saying that you're not entitled to how you wanna play. Just saying that it seems no developer's really figured out a way yet to make that bridge interface as effective as the 3rd person topdown.
And as much respect as I afford Cryptic, I don't think they'll solve that problem either, I'm afraid.

In some of the MMO's I have played the game is 3rd person by default. However by scrolling in you get closer and closer to a view just above and behind your Avatar. Upon getting too close the avatar disappears and there is a seamless transition into 1st person view. The UI can remain the same, in fact nothing else chages other than the fact you are now looking in first person view.
I would love to see this technique used in STO. I would love to see other game camera techniques used, like a flyaround camera that can record combat from different views while rotating and so on.

i think there should be an option to choose, like they did in swbf

Yeah, but what I also want is a close behind the shoulder view. This is the best comprimise between third and first, bringing you close to the action and still able to see your caracter in action. It works wonders in the late RE series.

There's a Spectrum Holobyte game I played many many years ago where you had a group, and you switched between them. It was an action arcade style, I believe 3rd person (but that I can't reven remember) and the scientist type wore those funny goggles.
That game was the best, but now, many years later I have no idea what the heck it was.

I recall Cryptic releasing the source for encoding demo files in CoH. It made for some pretty good machinima.
Add to that the popularity of camera recording options in space sim-type single player games (the X-Wing series film room springs to mind), and I wonder if maybe Cryptic might be rather readily capable of this sort of thing.

I think you're thinking of 'A Final Unity'?
I'm not sure I recall Spectrum Holobyte ever publishing anything else with the Trek license.

'A Final Unity' was a good game. I too really enjoyed being able to switch back and forth between a bridge and 3rd person view in BC and Final Unity. In fact its something i really missed with EVE- not being able to see inside your ship at all.
But as they've already told us our ships will have interiors i guess it goes without saying that we'll have the option of orchestrating the battle or at least viewing it from our command chair.
As far as ground combat I don't think Im in the majority here but I really enjoy a 3rd person view. Its easier for me to keep track of what enemy is where and who's doing what. I think that style of fighting also lends to this type of game because a ship has sensors and so it knows where every other ship and what it's doing during the battle.

If you look at the trailer closely you will see on what of the bridge battles the screen is on and showing the asteroid belt displayed earlyer, soo it's safe to say there will be some degree of bridge piloting and 3rd person.

They should give tactical differences to 3rd and 1st person. 3rd person gets to see more of space(great for smaller faster ships), but 1st person should get a radar to go with it so that have more tactical information than the 3rd person(great for larger war ships). but i suppose arguement could be made for the reverse as well on what view is good for what ships.
