Griefing is the harrassing of other characters in a flagrant manner.
Examples:
Killing someone much lower than you are, then hanging out at their body until they revive and killing them again.
Camping (hanging out at) a prime spot and killing anyone who comes near for the sheer fun of it.
Actively denying other players certain goals in the game through various actions.
[EDIT] Oh yeah, I forgot about my old favorite... Trains. In old EQ, one of the most common forms of griefing was Trains. Trains are where you aggro (aggravate to cause them to attack you) a bunch of monsters and have them chase you into another group of players. Usually these players are sitting around healing or socializing. This causes all these monsters to go ballistic on the other players, who a lot of times are AFK getting drinks or taking bios. So they come back from the bathroom to a dead character.
Basically, griefing is acting like a wad of pooooop. Doing things that would get your harbles kicked up in your throat, if you were face to face with the people you're doiing it to.

Purposely tormenting a person in a MMO. Usually by repeatedly killing someone in PvP. I can just be done by annoying, stalking, other another other form of constant harassment.

Heh, that reminds me of WoW. While I was running along the beach in STV, I spotted an Orc duking it out with a monster, so I jumped him and killed him. We were about two levels apart (around 30's or 40's, I forget), though he was down in hit points due to fighting that monster. A few minutes later I get a threatening message from a 1st-level Dwarf. Then I get jumped by a Level 60 Undead Rogue (I'm guessing the same player). He killed me a few times, but then I ran into that goblin town and had a good belly laugh as the goblins killed him every time he attacked me.
This guy was implaccable, though. He didn't just keep it up for that afternoon. He kept it up for DAYS, coming after me constantly. Talk about a grudge! He just wouldn't give it a rest. He'd sign into his Alliance account (which he shouldn't have had on a PVP server) to find out where I was, then sign into his Undead Rogue account so he could come after me.
The funny thing, though, was that during all that time, he died more often then I did. I made sure to hang around the goblin towns during that time as often as possible, so whenever he attacked I'd run towards the nearest goblin and bubble up, making myself invulnerable for 10 seconds while I healed myself back up to full, as he got netted by the goblins and bludgeoned. Best part was when he was reduced to low hit points, and my Paladin chucked his divine hammer at him, killing him. :D I ended up reporting him to the GM's, eventually, but man, it was funny as hell watching his character, who was around 20 levels higher than mine, flail away in vain trying to kill me as he's killed in turn by goblins, or weakened enough that even I could kill him.

That the wikipedia article on griefing is almost as long as the one for the Crimean War leaves me concerned for the future.

Typical griefer is usually between the ages of 12-18, caucasian male, with no or low self-esteem and little social life. They're about the same mentality of the jock or bully in the school yard. They're upset with how someone or something treats them, so they use MMOGs and their anonimity to cause problems for others. Most cohesive MMOGs have taken an active stance against griefing, but its up to the community at large to police and record the incidents.
