I'm no Trekkie.. so I don't know the lore and I absolutely care less if you do. I will play STO and hopefully gain the knowledge of the entire series via the game(hopefully).
First, my history:
I'm an 8 year vet of this war on terrorism and an Network Engineer as well as an Aircraft Electronics and Environments Systems journeyman through the United States Air Force, nough said.
I know you'll complain, whats the purpose of such an explanation? Well, it's for those smart people out there who need to know where all this idealogy comes from.
I'm aggressive.. you can consider that a character trait in your roleplaying games. I'm the guy who doesn't say much and will **** you off when I do. Like I said, its a characer trait. Learn to love what you get.
The Final Fantasy series before Final Fantasy 7 is my most inspiring adventure in this wonderful world we call gaming, under Xenogears. Death and destruction by infamous villains who somehow obtain more power than all your little heroes combined.
On to Star Trek -
Star Trek is about these things:(of course.. this is my perspective)
I know some of you get irritated, like me, when guys like me state this as a matter-o-fact.
Personality and structure- In an ever expanse universe full of what we called GIMPED villains. No Star Trek villain is more villainous than a rat. Nevertheless, Star Trek is an amazing techno-humorous yet serious adventure. The characters are 'sexy', professional nerds(hey, i'm one too.. if not a bit more hardcore than the average nerd... but by all means!), humility of the human capability in the face of dangers and sciences which can crush a human into oblivion. All conquered by personality and heroism on the GIMPED scale.
Engineering and Science- The aerospace, astro physics, neotechnotheology(more like scientology) paves a GIMPED way (albeit the amazing technological ideas) into what we would hope our futures are like.
Lore- Didn't really catch my eye... I love the personality and humour, not the lore.
Expansive Universe- Endless exploration and debacles over territory which leads to some combat and destruction.
Ships- Engineering, Sciences, Theories, Catastrophes, Maintenance, Modifications!! The show is about the ship and its crew!! The ship is a personality that faces the dangers of the bully we call the universe. Let this be a reflection and so shall it be so!!
Colonies- Of massive cities, small villages, strange places, odd creatures, pirates.. exploration!
Story- Lots and lots of story, plots and ideas. If you don't write good stories.. then this game is as good as dead. Who can possibly write so many stories.. who really wants to!? Who really can? Use the old stuff.. use new stuff... use bizarre stuff.. use amazing stuff!!! I can only see an overarching plot that leads players to similar objectives. If thats the case, then fine.. but
Create a random STORY generation system that:
A player (Valdo - name) explores out the reaches of a unknown territory. The planets are randomly generated as he explores that particular space.
A player (Bingo - name) explores out the reaches of a unknown territory close to Valdo that is also randomly generated but utilizing some of the random generated information from Valdo's space.
The effect of Valdo's decision on his space, interaction with a species is a good one.
The effect of Bingo's decision on his space, interaction with a species (now known to Valdo) is a bad one.
This combination leads to debacles between Starfleet and this new species we will call the Gilgamesh. This debate is brought to the attention of higher federation officers who in turn make decisions to correct Bingo's bad decision process. This could effect his overall ranking etc.. etc..
This could lead to other events.. This could also update the starmap with a territorial boundary known as Gilgamesh space.
Species competing for resources, Gilgamesh and say the Klingons. They interact with each other in an automated way, but this interaction is felt at Starfleet and can be decided by players wishing to work at Starfleet. They decide to send Valdo on a mission to protect the now new Gilgamesh from the resource hungary Klingons. A battle ensues and Valdo requires reinforcements. Bingo joins in Valdo's mission and interactions take place.
Bingo fights off the Klingons while Valdo works on Diplomacy with the Gilgamesh and Klingons.
This diplomacy might require an away team to land on the planet controlled by the Gilgamesh and seiged by the Klingons. Of course... all this interaction is randomly generated based on enemy personalities and diplomacy rules.
The mission is a randomly generated dungeon based on Gilgamesh's culture and ideologies.
The Klingons attacked only for resources, thus getting stuck in a situation where they must be rescued.
The Gilgamesh are against the Klingons and fight any Starfleet assistance for them.
However, Valdo's away team is respectful of both Gilgamesh and Klingons and while the Gilgamesh are saved from Klingon seige at the Gilgamesh outpost on the planet, the Klingons must be saved. Valdo's crew holds the Klingons in arrest while Bingo's team, who successfully disabled the Klingons in space, beams down with an away team to a strange location with an amazing secret. First, the Klingons are captured and awaiting assimilation by creatures of strange origin, which kill the Klingons if they are successful. However, Bingo, who's been reprimanded by Starfleet for past deeds kills the beasts and saves the Klingons Leader.
In return, the leader of the Klingons and the Leader of the Gilgamesh share a technology secret found in the depths of this planets infrastructure. Valdo and Bingo gain the favor of Klingons, Gilgamesh, and Starfleet. The mission eases some war tensions between Klingons.. even if so very very very slight. The Gilgamesh and Klingons lose the technology secret but a peaceful arrangement is made.. which could inevitably change due to random event generations due to such things as territory control, resource sharing, trade rights, alliances gone bad.. etc.. etc..
This is what I see Star Trek like and I would certainly enjoy the dynamics.
