i just watched the replay of the livecast, and I caught something that i hadn't origionally picked up on. Close to the beginning of Jack's description of the game he talks about the storyline of the game. As you all know the game will be set 30 years after the last movie. He goes on to say that over the comming months they will be updating the site with a year by year detail of events that lead up to the launch the game.
I was thinking. Could Star Trek online be ready for launch in 30 month's? I may be reaching, but as some people have already noted, it seamed as if Jack was just dying to throw a date out there.

Way too many assumptions in this thread. He didn't say monthly or anything. Just "in the coming months".

I realise that, but you have to admit, it would make for an interesting easter egg. He did say it will be comming sooner than most of us expect.

Yes, he wanted to at least give a rough estimate, but it may come out in 3(or less) years.... Since this is practically going from the ground up, it's no wonder why it's going to take longer to get this one done than Champions.

Now, I will prefice this by saying this is all unsubstantiated speculation.
In the podcast, Emert talks about the engine. And the fact that the engine was already made and just needed to have the content plugged into it.
He makes a reference along the lines of "When Champions comes out in April and if STO were to come out after that"
He also makes numerous references to the game coming out quicker then expeected. But, there were many folks that insisted he not reveal anymore.
Now, this is pure guessing and more then a dose of wishful thinking. But, perhaps the reason he couldnt say anything about the release is Paramount leaning on them to keep quiet...
Maybe the game will be released the same time as the movie?

To me sooner then expected would be 12 - 18 months. I would worry much longer then that people would loose interest and usually an announcment I don't feel would be that early.

I would expect the game to be out in roughly 2.5-3 years, which would reflect his mentioning of the month by month updates on the time line. Of course, sooner than that would be even better.

I mean 2 - 3 years for an MMO like this would be Amazing.

Considering that they have already generated a playable game (to what extent we don't know), that really says a lot about how fast this game is moving along in development. The fact that the engine is already built and functioning should really let them spend more time crafting the game itself. If it does take 3+ years I think we can be assured that it will be of the highest quality.

They stole an existing engine...but will likely have to update its abilities for ST needs.
But people keep acting like "content" is the easy part. It's not. Content is HUGE. Unless they go with Wow style "fetch 10 blue", now "fetch 10 red" type idiot quests it takes a lot ot time to think up, plan, and then code complex adventures for us.
It's gonna take a while. A long while.
I'll bet on beta in 1 year at the absolute earliest, and that's if its a long beta run.

They didn't steal an existing engine, they used their own internally developed engine that is being used in Champions Online. They know the engine and how it performs etc etc which means they have cut down on the initial development time required and they can devote that time to better gameplay elements.
