Ok, I was so excited when I saw what Perpetual had planned for STO. The thought of a Star Trek game that ACCTUALLY included the heart and soul of the Star Trek Universe [the diplomacy and scientific discovery] , and not just a Kill what you can game like every other star trek game out there. Every game every brought out to try and represent this fantastic universe have ONLY shown the combat side. And as i am sure most of you know the violence is the LAST option for Starfleet. All i want to know is, is this a game that will encompase ALL that is Star Trek or will it be just another poor representation where all you do is fly from place to place and kill things? all i saw in the movie was combat, though the way the LOOKED was pleasing but... another kill fest is the LAST thing this genre needs.

Watch the webcast. Jack quite specifically mentioned that while combat will be a part of the game, just as important will be exploration. They're also considering how to include diplomatic relations, but that's not set yet.

As Kinjiru says, you have nothing to fear. Exploration and discovery are major, major game mechanics here, and they're trying to figure out a way to represent diplomacy as well. :)

1) Welcome to the boards.
2) It was a trailer. Every trailer for every Star Trek movie ever made has always focused on the action elements, blazing torpedoes, exploding consoles, crew fllying across the bridge, and the captain snarling "Fire". Its not that that represents the eventual "screentime" of those events, it simply makes a better "commercial" than footage of Wesley growing nanintes in a petrie dish.
3) Jack has said there will be a significant "exploration and research"component in the game, as well as a strong "trade economy" component.
That said, you will of course see more combat in this game than the average season of a trek show. Television writers are only limited by budget. There is a comparatively finite number of scenarios you can turn into an effective game though. Its hard to make a game out of "Data gets a cat".
You must be willing to compare this *game* against other MMOs, not against books or television shows, or some "perfect idea" in your head. If you're not willing to do that, then of course the game will only disappoint you.

As those before have said they have a ever expanding exploration system (Sounds tasty) that allows for you to establish first contact with races.

Imagine how complex it will get when the mission moves to "Mission #765 - Data gets a Daughter". :D

Well i for one am glad that they are working hard to include more than just expolsions and battle damage. Now, not to whine, but i had a whole crew waiting to voyage together, thats the only other element i think would be awsome is more than one player per ship.. but hey nothing is perfect and if half of what was replied is true you'll find an avid player here.

I think combat was the biggest part of the gameplay footage as, visually, that's what provides the most bang for our buck, so to speak. But, I think in terms of actual gameplay, combat won't occur as often as you fear - but when it does, it'll come on thick and fast.

No, not another slaughter fest, those peeps expecting that, which by the looks of the boards there are lots, will be disappointed and go back to the game they came from. Leaving us with a game with lots to offer, exploration, questing, flying and fighting.....:)

LOL, I hope not. I hope with the help of a great game we can show those other players that you can have a ton of fun and rarely ever have to load your torpedo tubes. ;)
