There should be no excuses for faliure on this one, with so many MMOs being done in the last few years (and Cryptic developing one of the better ones). Take all of the elements from the successful MMOs, throw out all the crap from the unsuccessful ones, and put it all in a Federation blender.

If making a good game were such an easy job, these guys wouldn't be getting paid the big bucks to do it.

Hell, I'm a graphic designer, I'd sign on for half pay for the chance to work on it!

Actually, game developers aren't actually paid all that well on average. I know what you meant, though. :D

I don't think that there has been any indication that Star Trek Online is going to be a failure by any means, and posts like this just spread unfounded negativity. I think all of the information about the game that has come out in the past few days has been very exciting and, while it has obviously inspired debate, I don't know of anything that has been revealed so far that could possibly make this game a failure.

They get paid better than those of us who write about them, so they can kiss my grits. :p

The may be no exceptable excuse for failure, but there is a history of it. I know for sure this is, at least the third attempt at making a Star Trek MMO.

Sorry about the confusion. I didn't mean any negativity at all, just anticipated frustration from all the other Star Trek games and MMOs that looked to have great potential but failed for various reasons. In fact I was trying to compliment Cryptic studios and the job they have done with CoH. And I am an avid supporter of this game, planning to buy it the minute it comes out.

Thanks for the insults though.

Sadly I fear it will be a failure in the eyes of the uber geeky fanbase.

To most regular guys who like sci-fi & gaming it'll be good. Hell, it'll be great!

But you're bound to get some anoraks who'll spit their dummies out, make big long self righteous post about why they wont be playing the game, just because the game won't let you do some obscure thing seen once on a episode of TNG or sumthing (e.g. the picard maneuver).

I agree that one way to fail is to get together with $OE.

I think where threads like this one stem from is due to the fact that there haven't been a lot of truly good Star Trek games; and despite the massive fan base... video game producers just seem more interested in a cash-cow product but aren't willing or are unable to produce a truly great product; they make the proverbial "box with 'Star Trek' slapped on it with Picard's famous intro lines," because they know people will buy it.

Birth of the Federation was okay, Armada was decent but ship textures (borg assimilator for example) were pathetic. Armada II was much better, but still... Dominion Wars had soooo many bugs and glitches - heck, it wouldn't even launch correctly half the time. The list goes on and on...

I think a lot of fans, including myself, who are die-hard Trekkies are tired of waiting for a truly great bar-setting game and we just hope and pray that this breaks the sad tradition.

I have faith in these guys I mean hell they are doing better than P2 in terms of fanbae out reach and content. As long as we give our support and use constructive criticism and the like I think we'll get not just a good MMO but a great MMO that will not be copying WoW. Important thing is to remember that this type of game is give and take in terms of cannon. No one is perfect and we have to accept that mistakes will be made. Mistakes can be corrected if we respond constructively as a community because thats what patches are for :p

I guess what I was trying to do with this post is express my frustration but also support and hope.

Frustration -from the fact that I have bought and played almost every Star Trek PC game that has come out since TOS Judgment Rites. Most of them have been of the cash-cow variety (with very few notable exceptions).

Hope - that a game truly worthy of the Star Trek name will eventually be made.

Support - that I think Cryptic can do it.

Anyone remember Star Trek: A Final Unity? That was actually, imo... a good one. Then again, I was only 9 at the time lol

Is it wrong that I actually enjoy both Elite Force II and Starfleet Command III? Cash cows they may be, but they are still quality titles.

Never said they were bad just...not as good as they could have been (SFC III was really toned down compared to SFC II and EF II single player campaign felt like a bad mix between Independence Day and Starship Troopers). And Final Unity was one of the best every made.

I really enjoyed DS9: Harbinger (probably one of the few who did).

A Final Unity was great (regardless of your age - I was 30 when it came out). Still have the little decorative blinking pin that came with the collector's edition.
