View Full Version : A Request to the STO Community

Hello all current and new Star Trek Online Forums members and fellow Star Trek Fans. :)

First off my tip of the saucer section to Cryptic Studios for taking on such an exciting and daunting task in putting together Star Trek Online. The best of luck and looking forward to what you come up with. :D

Second, please take this request with a grain of dilithium crystals. We're all friends here and I only mean this request with the most respect and politeness.

Now, onto the heart of the matter....

Many threads have popped up in the past few hours and days since the release of the official game play trailer and webcast. Some are for the game being developed while others are already upset and stating he/she will not buy or play the game.

My request is two fold

1. Continue to submit and inform other fellow STO players and Cryptic of ideas and suggestions for STO. Only with a good flow of communication can we help STO become what it will be on the day of its launch. :)

2. Please give Cryptic a chance and don't write them off immediately. Friends, we have not even hit the beta stage of the game. Let them give us more information, videos, screenshots etc before we start making decisions and choices about the game.

I know some of you are not pleased with what you've seen/know so far. Friends the journey is long yet at the end we will reach the planet, beam down, and see an entire new, exciting, and pretty cool Star Trek Massive Multiplayer Game. That by itself is a new milestone for Star Trek and the gaming community.

Respectfully submitted. :)

Really people are judging cryptic because no one has heard of them. Most of the time when companies no one has ever heard of make a game based off something as big as star trek they tend to fail and **** alot of people off. Its not there fault that they don't trust cryptic its histories fault.

They're well known and respected within the MMORPG community, to be certain - but a lot of the posters here are first-time MMO players, so Cryptic is an unknown quantity to them.

I was going to say the same thing yet, ya beat me to it. :p

Good take on the situation here Dart. :) It is true in that we here know/are aware of Cryptic yet, many newcomers as you mentioned are unaware of who Cryptic Studios is/how they are part of the gaming community.

Well said again! :)

Respectfully submitted. :) You have to understand that, there is no way any game is going to make everyone happy. For instance, I asalutly hate WOW, but it is the most popular and most successful MMO ever. This kind of backlash is quite common when a game first releases details for the first time.

Some get mad. Those people will hang around for while campaingning for change. Some people will get enough, and some won't. That's the nature of things. It is at the very least two years before this game will see the light of day. The community will go through many phases. You will never stop the nay-sayers. You just have to try to not get sucked in to their rants.

Yes, that is very true. I hadn't considered that.

Agreed. It was just exciting to see a company take STO from an idea to see something on the playing screen :D Could of / Should of there been more? Maybe - but at least now the important question of WILL there BE more will be a YES :D Once it gets closer to beta, we see more trailers, and more details emerge its too early to make such harsh judgements yet...

Sit back, and just take it all in right now - take it in, because you SEEN STO (and not just another failure attempt) :)

I agree with both of your requests, and I think Cryptic Studios has already proven that they are more than capable of producing Star Trek Online in a way that will satisfy the fans and be able to bring in a new audience to the universe.

I'm aware of that ob1klone. Many a times I remind people that you cannot make everyone like you/be happy etc. I felt it was necessary to curb part of the upset people yet, also offer some encouragement to those who are excited about where STO is headed.

It should be made by activision who have already made quite a few successful star trek games.

After i posted that I realized that I wasn't telling you anything you didn't already know. But I figured if someone new to MMO's reads it maybe they will get the idea from another perspective.

Activision no longer exists and has been merged into Vivendi Games.

If Cryptic has already put a lot of work into STO, why would they stop and hand it over to someone else now? If you were on the development team and heard that, wouldn't you be rather upset that you just wasted 7 months on something for nothing?

Exactly why the forums are a good thing. I agree completely no more pessimism let's just give Cryptic good ideas, like what voice actors, sounds, places (I'd personally like to go to the Zephram Cocraine Park on Earth in Montana.

Ok but what is your main point? Activision should make STO since those two games are still playable online?

Plus SFC3 is no longer supported by Activision and the community is hosting a server for people to play on not Activision.

I agree... well put.

Now.. I hope no one else has to write another thread like this because this should be something we can all understand and follow and should go without saying.

I concur and it is somewhat sad it had to be stated, yet reminders are helpful from time to time.

Well said Arcturus! :)

We all should give Cryptic our support and ideas along the way. That is what will help make STO a great game for Trek fans and non-trek gamers. :)

Ok yet, you still haven't answered my question: why should Activision make Star Trek Online? It is better qualified than Cryptic? Does Activision have a better development process?

Just looking for some reasons/answers.....

The "know it all" slash "instant gratification" crowd is a big part of MMO's it seems. They will always pop up with doomsday threads while somehow spouting mystical knowledge from an unseen force.

Yes that is true and something no developer can avoid. Still all I am simply asking is to just everyone breathe, use some Vulcan mind focus techniques, and let Cryptic do their job. A simple yet, hard to do request at times I know. :)

That isn't unique to MMOs, man.

It's the internet.

Just again, my two fold request to the community is rather simple. I hope that we all will and continue to keep it in mind as we move forward. If I'm willing to give Cryptic a chance plus share my thoughts and ideas, I hope you all can too.

i liked WoW. ithought it was interesting but annoying only because i was on a pvp (player vs player) server then i went to a pve (player vs enviroment) and i had a better time. the thing that kills any game are the people who's arrogance and lack of an attention span that act like jerks or are purposely annoying and whine about how they cant find something you help them out and another idiot whines about the same thing.

i'll explain this.

theres a game that i played that was in beta about a year ago one of the quests was unclear on the location on which to complete the said quest. needless to say i did find the location. now in the said game about every five minutes like big ben you would get someone whine on where to complete the said quest. you would shout it to them (shouts are posted on all maps) they would go about it and thank you then the next dummy would ask the same exact question.

Forgive me for not reading the entire thread but as soon as i saw the letters "WoW" i felt i had to make a post aimed for the devs. PLEASE DON'T LISTEN TO THE WoW COMMUNITY.. yes WoW is popular and still one of the highest populated MMO's around but.. and this is a bit but. look whats happened to all other MMO's, they're all based on the same system now, grindfests with nothing to do at end game cause the devs listened to WoW players and changed or created games similar to WoW. Don't get me wrong i'm not aiming my anti-WoW at anyone specific as i know a lot of people who play WoW and enjoy it and fair enough. Everyone has their own preference but please don't make a space/away mission version of such a simplified game that it becomes boring.

ok WoW comments over with..

On topic i think Cryptic should listen to the future players but take it with a pinch of salt, stick to what your intending to make and do it. too many games have been simplified too much and made into the same old rubbish because the beta testers wanted things their way, more PvP, less economy etc etc.. this is bad as SOE proved with SWG by bringing the NGE out.

one of two things will happen upon release and the following months..

1. Cryptic make a great game that appeals to everyone, Star Trek fan or just MMO players alike.

2. The game is made into a boring grindfest or PvP orientated game like the majority of others and fails.

this of course is just what i've seen in my 7 years of playing MMO's. The reason i believe in the 2 above outcomes is from seeing how the MMO industry has turned out during those 7 years. I'm seriously looking forward to playing a Star Trek MMO as i've been a fan of the TV series and movies all my life (pushing 29 years), plus i can't ever expect a Dr Who MMO to come out lol..

From the Webcast i got the impression the game is aiming for an Elite/Freelancer style with more exploration than Combat, some trading (please god i hope so) and other aspects thrown in. This is what i've been dreaming of for years..

anyways enough said by me.. good luck cryptic and keep up the good work.

Good points there yet I think Cryptic will go with option number 1 out of your 2 there. They stated it should be a fun game hence no grindfest or stuff like that.

Good to see you also stating that Cryptic should listen to the community. :)
