in line with all the "leaked launch date" rumors floating around(which seem to be supported by how much of the game appears finished in the gameplay trailer), anyone willing to bet STO will be ready to launch around the same time as ST XI? in fact, i wouldnt be supprised if we see a trailer for STO before the movie :D

I think it will be close to the movie, and before the end of next year, but May is really pushing it, "sooner than we think" or not.

That would really be stretching it for an MMO... well... a GOOD MMO anyway. At the pace things seem to be progressing, and how dedicated Cryptic seems to be, I honestly believe we'll see a Holiday 2009-Early 2010 release.

I Agree with you.

summer 09, callin' it now, with the trailer in front of the movie! game will probably lack content like most of cryptics works, but still be fun.

I'd say from what we say its less that they need to build gameplay mechanics and more they just realy need to build... the world!

With that in mind I'd say that the game could be ready by fall next year, I'm sure Cryptic as a company wants to see Champions get out of the box safe and sound before dealing with launching STO. Will it be close to the movies launch? Yes I think so... but then again they seem very confident that its coming "sooner than we think" so I'd say a 2009 (probably late) launch.

I'm thinking around the DVD release of the movie. Although, I welcome an earlier release.

With using an already existing engine. Half the work is already done. All that they really need to do is code game play mechanics and render graphics. All the networking, core programming, building tools, etc are already there. Most MMOs are started from scratch.

That doesn't mean it for sure though. AoC used an existing engine but, still got delayed a few times. This is STO though. A lot of the visuals will be ships, stars, and, planets. All spheres and symmetry for the most part.

Terrain, cities, vessel interiors, and quest content is where a lot of the work will be.

I like the DVD idea. Package a nice demo and a trailer with the DVD for sure.

i think it would be great if we could luck out and get it with the movie but for an MMO that really is pushing it if we want it to be released with the kind of bang the Star Trek MMO really deserves.

Having it coincide with the film's theatrical release would be pushing it, but with Cryptic, I'm never surprised when they manage to pull some kind of voodoo sorcerous miracle and make a liar out of me.

I'm thinking maybe Q4 2009 - just in time fo' Christmas (and probably the DVD release). :)

We'd all be in beta right now if STO was going to be released around the movie.

This is an MMO. They are a ***** to develop, and we'll probably be lucky to see a beta next year.

I bet anything it will be released with and or close to it.

Not disagreeing on the difficult task that is creating an MMO, Plankcore, but we do have to remember that Cryptic came into development with a fully-functioning engine. The developers are already playing the game, both at the office and from their homes. The trailer they released yesterday was in-game footage.

We don't know where they stand on things like game mechanics and missions, but we know that it's working - and that's the really time-intensive part. :)

To be completely honest I'd love for them to pull a Blizzard and wait until the game is completely polished before they release it. As a gamer and a fan who wants to play a great game, I will wait as long as it takes. We saw what happened when SWG fell short of the mark upon release: it never recovered. STO is arguably in the same position.
