I think this would be awesome. Ala attacking the founders homeworld. Stay with me here...

I was just thinking about the different capabilities and freedom a player might have with what they do with their starship. For instance, it would be hillarious if you discovered a remote planet and if you had enough starships in your fleet, there was an option to perform "PLANETARY BOMARDMENT"! :)

It wouldn't be something you could effectively execute on your own, but with a fleet of your buddies ships and yours it would be fierce if it was an option. Like if there was a mission that you had to perform to irradicate a threat or hostile force. Instead of beaming down, you could target cities or bases on the surface as an alternative. ( i guess it would be in a mission briefing or something as an objective).

I don't think you should be able to necessarily irradicate an entire population thus wiping it from the game and not letting anyone else discover them. But it would be cool if what you do to a planet stays that way for the next person to come by and see it has been attacked.

Just another thought...

Discuss.

Don't be surprised if their ion cannons take offense to your idea.

It should always be an option but as we've seen in the series attacks sometimes for some reason have to be made much closer (like that Episodes where Klingon ships went straight to the planetary base and attacked it up close).

Methinks the weapons tend to dissipate after going through so much atmosphere so you have to take your ships into the Atmosphere if the base is heavily shielded.

they would most likely have surface to space weaponry to counter

For Klingons, sure.

Not really a normal Starfleet modus operandi.

I think the idea of even being able to fly ships in low atmosphere to fire on bases on the planet or even landing (like the Intrepid class voyager) would be supreme.

On the flip side, if you were on a base on a planet, having the ability to defend from attacking ships would be clever too. Firing a large defense weapon and deploying shields.

The possibilities of this game really are endless - very exciting!
