So I have read that you will have NPC's for your crew. Does that mean you can have NPC group mates, or will it be more like groups from Earth and Beyond and EVE online, where its all player controlled?

Grouping hasn't been fully explained. We do know that for away missions you can do them with your NPC crew, but it was also mentioned that you can do them with a friend.

There is also grouping in space with multiple ships. But the details on all of this are vague.
